As part of large scientific conference I organized at Berkeley in late May of 2010, I also arranged a reunion dinner at Le Bateau Ivre for roughly 60 of the conference participants. In short, the owner, chef, and wait-staff of the restaurant did a superb job. The owner, Arlene, was very flexible and patient with my numerous last-minute requests, including increasing the guest list by 10 just a couple of days before the dinner and asking to set up a projector and screen just an hour or so in advance. WhenI met with the chef to set the menu, and he offered numerous options and suggestions. The guests all spoke very highly of the food, which included cornish game hens, mushroom ravioli, NY strip, and baked salmon. Finally, I note that the staff were extremely attentive to all our guests, not to mention patient to work around the projector I set up in the middle of the main room! The evening at Le Bateau Ivre was the highlight of the conference for everyone in attendance. I highly recommend this lovely and intimate restaurant both for its food and for its service.

I love this beautiful oasis on Fourth Street. I eat lunch on the patio with my dog Houghton. The soba is great. The best value on the menu is the bento box which is a fabulous food-to-go box for $7.50.

Service can sometimes be spotty but not usually. The dry rub is fantastic (do not expect web BBQ, this is the dry rub). You can add your own flavored BBQ (mild tangy sweet and a mix of horseradish and spicy - a hint of habanero). The burger is great. The food portions are large that account for my never making it to dessert. Their brisket is fair to very good. Bo's has a better brisket (but that is it). The noise level is a bit high during the winter months, but it dissipates when the top floor windows are open. These people are in the restaurant business and they will take care of your (BBQ) needs. You want something sloppy a different style of BBQ (Gorillas’'). Try T-Rex you will not be dissatisfied. To prove the point, a friend was taking out his boss to birthday lunch and I told him that I just came back from T-Rex, he replied, "you should have told me and I would have dumped the boss!"
5.Bay Grille & Lounge
200 Marina Blvd
Did you ever think your children would go hungry at a restaurant that sells entrees for $24-$33? Go to the Bay Grille at the DoubleTree Hotel at the Berkeley, CA Marina and they will. My family and I arrived there with friends with a total party of 9 to eat and celebrate the July 4th holiday. We arrived at 6:30pm and they told us the wait would be 20-40 minutes. They seated us at 7:40 pm. After repeated attempts to get menus, we were given one menu along with bread and water about an hour later, I approached the manager and I told her we had been waiting for almost 2 hours to order. Her response: ""Well, just tell me where you're sitting and we'll take care of it."" The right words - said with an attitude of ""Well, I know I have to say this, but I really don't give a $%^*"" She took our order 15 minutes later. And after seeing all the people who were also left waiting for hours, we took our children, who were all complaining of hunger, away from that place -- 3 hours after we had arrived for meals we never received.

This is a great spot with awesome seating inside and outside, great food, and friendly faces! The pancakes, omelets, coffee and tea are all delicious and a lot of the ingredients are organic. The internet is free, just be sure to support them with a some business, the food is all worth it! On a sunny day the back patio is great for you and your dog! My boyfriend and I enjoy this cafe almost daily!

In reading some of the negative reviews of Venus, I can understand how bad service can taint an experience. But, I must say I haven't had any bad experiences at Venus. Every time I've gone, I've gotten great service and the food has been beyond terrific. It's a really cute place for a date! I would hate to go there when it's busy, though...(which means I don't go on the weekends.)

Highly recommend this place to any one trying to get off the books and destroy some brain cells. This is the place to do it. Tip well and get hooked up. Trust me.

Exceptional. My favorite is Penne Ariabata. Folks, this is a guaranteed winner if you have some family or friends in town for dinner. The atmosphere is lively and fun. I've lived in the area and have come to this restaurant for more than 10 years. Note, bring cash (only, don't be scared) and be prepared for great food. Thanks, Frank:)

This place has the best slices of pizza I've ever tasted. I've had it 3 times a day before. After work, I stop buy for a slice of cheese. They occasionally have my favorite, ""hawaiin"", and so I get that, but the reason I go is the high quality cheese on the pizza. The pizza prices are a bit elevated, going for $3 a slice, but when the pizza comes right out of the oven, the price is well worth it. I often go with friends, but if I have a compulsion to go buy a slice of blondies pizza, I will definetly go buy some.

First time I went to Khana Peeena, I was a bit reluctant - I saw one bad review suggesting the food was not fresh (and needing to go to the bathroom after). Then I realized they opened a branch just in front of another good Indian restaurant, so I took the chance (as it looked clean and nice from the outside).\r That has been 4 months ago. I live nearby and it has become my favorite restaurant. I go there at least once a week (and that's a lot, considering the variety of restaurants around). \r Since then, I brought a lot of friends and we all agreed - great value for your money. This is were I go when I feel like ""home cooking"" (and I am not an Indian).\r Service is great, sometimes a bit slow (but not more than you'd expect from an Indian restaurant).\r \r P.S. - This review refers Rockridge branch (the one on college).\r Another thing - I eat mostly vegeterian food - they have a huge list of great vegeterian dishes.\r My friends tried, of course, the other non-vegeterian dishes and loved them. I can only tell about the vgeterian part of the menu (and I LOVED the naans).\r \r Bottom line: my favorite Indian restaurant in the bay area!

Even if you're not Indian, as long as you adventorous and can stand spicier fares, I really recommend this place. Reasonable prices, and exotic stuff you cannot find in other Indian restaurants. On weekends, the cook even more authentic stuff that few non-Indians have tasted!

For each birthday, my family likes to get together and try a new fancy restaurant. But now that there are 2 toddlers in the family and we're new to Berkeley, I didn't know what to do. I picked Eccolo mainly because it's on 4th street, which I love. It ended up being the perfect place! The staff was very accommodating, especially regarding the toddlers. They had a separate kids menu and asked us soon after we arrived if we wanted to order something for the kids right away. The ambiance was very nice with the perfect amount of light. And the food was excellent. The proscuitto appetizer was fabulous and my butternut squash cannelloni was delicious. Whenever the little ones were restless we were able to take them outside, walk them down the street with lots to look at in the windows & not too busy with cars.
