Gastroenterology, a specialty of internal medicine, focuses on the digestive system and the treatment of illness or injury within the gastrointestinal tract.
Colon Cancer
Endoscopy
Endoscopy is a procedure that involves inserting a long, thin tube into the body to conduct an internal health examination. Gastroenterologists perform endoscopies on an outpatient basis. Patients must fast for 8 hours prior and will be under sedation during the procedure. After the procedure, patients may have a sore throat or feel groggy and should avoid driving for 24 hours.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome presents as numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in the wrist or hand. It is caused by pressure bearing down on the median nerve. The pressure is caused by inflammation, which can originate from repeated movements, disease or lifestyle changes (i.e. pregnancy).
Multiple Sclerosis
Speech-language therapy provides care, comfort and support to patients struggling with communication, memory, comprehension and consumption of food or drink. Patients recovering from illness or injury, such as a traumatic brain injury, stroke or multiple sclerosis, may benefit from speech-language therapy.

At Southwestern Behavioral Health Center, we understand the need for mental health services is great. SWBH offers inpatient programs for children, adolescents and adults, as well as an outpatient program for follow-up. All inpatient programs offer an individualized treatment plan created by a caring, highly experienced team using the most progressive therapies available with the individual and the family involved in the process. Ages 4-17 will attend an accredited public school year-round.

The outpatient services at Southwestern Behavioral Health Center offer follow up medication management from inpatient stay by health care providers who specialize in psychiatry.

Echocardiogram involves using sound waves to create real time imaging of the heart muscle. Depending on the echocardiography ordered by the physician, dyes and saline may be inserted intravenously to provide contrast during the imaging. Echocardiograms are non-invasive and painless. Patients should expect the procedure to be no different than a routine ultrasound.

Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine imaging serves to diagnose or care for any anomaly within a patient’s anatomy and its operation during the beginning stages of illness. Patients undergoing nuclear medicine should understand the procedure is relatively painless and the exposure to radiation is compatible to that of a diagnostic x-ray.
Computed Tomography
Your medical provider will call you soon after your screening to explain your results and discuss any additional necessary medical care. If the CT scan were to detect any potentially cancerous nodules, another screening may be needed after a few months to monitor your lungs’ conditions. Regardless of your results, annual screenings are recommended, as yearly low-dose CT scans have been shown to decrease mortality in patients who had increased risk due to smoking.

The Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbarics offers highly specialized wound care to patients suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections and other chronic wounds which have not healed in a reasonable amount of time. Advanced treatments include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, negative pressure wound therapy, bio-engineered skin substitutes, biological and biosynthetic dressings and growth factor therapies. Physical Therapy
Physical therapy focuses on treating physical abnormalities, to include reduced range of motion, inflammation, pain and stiffness. Physical therapy is beneficial in assisting patients recovering from surgery, suffering from joint illness and seeking to regain mobility after injury. Physical therapists may use exercise, massage and ice/heat methods during care.
Occupational Therapy
After discharge patients will be scheduled for follow-up appointments. Some surgery will require physical or occupational therapy as part of the recovery process.
