Oral Cancer Screening
Examine your mouth, record existing conditions and existing dentistry, measure pockets in your gums to check for gum disease, check teeth for cavities and signs of damage (example: fractures), perform oral cancer screening.

Teeth Cleaning
For one flat rate per year, you will receive 2 exams, 2 dental cleanings, and all necessary diagnostic x-rays. You will also receive a 20% discount on all additional dental services.
Dental Sealants
We frequently recommend sealants to protect teeth from decay. If you look at your back teeth, you can probably see the “hills and valleys” of enamel (protective outer layer on teeth). A sealant fills in the narrow “valleys,” which is where plaque can easily collect and form a cavity. The sealant forms an extra layer of protection, so that plaque cannot get into the narrow areas of the tooth and form a cavity.

Fillings
If you do have a tooth cavity or if your teeth are showing signs of decay, your dentist may recommend a number of general dentistry treatments to restore the tooth to proper health and minimize the risk of further decay. A dental filling is usually the first line of treatment for a tooth cavity. Drs. Smallberg and Satornino may use a composite resin dental filling, porcelain filling/onlay or gold filling/onlay. Dental crowns are used on teeth that are more severely affected by tooth decay. If the tooth decay is advanced and infecting the tooth pulp, a root canal may be needed to restore proper health and alleviate associated pain.
Resin Composite
Bonding involves adhering composite resin material that is matched to the color of the tooth, to the front of the tooth. This is done to repair damage done to the tooth by decay, to alter the alignment of the tooth, close gaps between the teeth, or for cosmetic purposes. First the surface of the tooth is roughened in order to accept the bonding and hold it. A gel is applied to micro etch the tooth surface, and a primer/bond agent is applied so the material adheres to the surface. Then the material itself is placed on the tooth and hardened with intense light. The composite resin material is shaped and polished to get a lustrous finish as a last step.
Veneers
Veneers are a dental procedure in which a covering is placed over the outside (visible area) of the tooth. Veneers are usually only done to the part of the teeth that are visible when talking or smiling. The procedure can be direct or indirect.
Crowns
It takes two appointments to restore a tooth with a crown. In the first any decay is removed from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then a digital scan of the tooth is taken and emailed to the dental lab to fabricate your computer designed crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, usually milled by a robot-like milling machine. During this time a temporary crown is worn. In the second visit this temporary is removed. Then the permanent crown is adjusted as needed and then cemented in place. With digital scans, adjustments are less common, due to the computer’s accuracy, making the appointment quicker.

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment (also referred to as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is made necessary when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to this pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and detect problems early) Sometimes deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may cause the nerve to be damaged to the point it needs root canal therapy, also. Once this occurs the pulp becomes infected, and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess). By the time the pulp is infected it must be treated, and cannot heal on its own. It can even weaken the entire immune system. This is dangerous, not to mention very painful. Symptoms that the pulp has become infected may include sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, pain, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Sometimes, however, no symptoms are apparent and the person is unaware of any problem until a checkup.

Deep Cleaning
The gums, ligaments, and bone around the teeth form the foundation for ones teeth. All structures are also referred to as the periodontium. When the periodontium is not healthy, it jeopardizes the teeth just as a bad foundation would threaten the stability of a house. Signs of unhealthy periodontium (gum disease) may be as follows: gums that are red and bleed easily, persistent bad breath, gums that are pulled away from the tooth, loose teeth, and changes in the position or bite of the teeth. Any of these signs may mean something is wrong. With the proper care, however, it may be possible to return them to a healthy state. This is where appropriate gum treatments come in. If you’re having a problem, come in and see us so we can take care of it right away. The treatment usually involves a deep cleaning or root planing done under a local anesthetic, along with local antibiotic agents. If the gum disease gets too severe it may need to be treated through surgery or extraction. This is why it is important to get it treated at the first sign of a problem.

It is not a well-known fact, but many people are walking around with very broken down teeth. This impacts their ability to smile and chew. These people are unhappy, but silent about their unfortunate condition. Many people are afraid that a removable denture is their only option. Some people are reminded about how their grandparents would put their teeth in a glass before bedtime or have trouble eating food, while their dentures would come loose at mealtimes. Missing teeth can even lead to a collapsed look in your face, making you look older.

Once you lose a tooth, you start to lose the bone around the lost tooth. When you replace the lost tooth with an implant, you maintain the bone. Both of these options allow you to maintain your bone, eat without discomfort, and have a younger looking face.
