Dr. Olga Shif graduated Magna Cum Laude from Arcadia Universityâ€™s Honors Program with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and chemistry. She earned her medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After completing medical school, she spent a year at the well-known and respected Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami performing glaucoma and pattern ERG research. Dr. Shif went on to complete her internship at Pennsylvania Hospital, also in Philadelphia. She relocated to the state of Texas, where she was accepted into the residency program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Subsequently, she was accepted for a vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at Sinai Hospitalâ€™s Krieger Eye Institute, returning her to the east coast. At the end of her first year of fellowship, the program was discontinued, and she then joined The National Retina Instituteâ€™s fellowship program to continue her training. After completion of her fellowship, Dr. Shif joined the attending staff.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Bert M. Glaser was an internationally respected retina surgeon who practiced for over 35 years. After devoting ten years as Professor of Ophthalmology and Vitreoretinal Surgery and as Director for the Center for Vitreoretinal Research at The Wilmer Eye Institute of The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Glaser established his own retina treatment center, which evolved into The National Retina Institute. Under Dr. Glaserâ€™s direction, NRI became one of the most preeminent retina research and treatment centers in the world.
Macular Degeneration
There are two types of Macular Degeneration: Dry, or Non-exudative Macular Degeneration and Wet Macular Degeneration, or Exudative Macular Degeneration. Macular Degeneration affects the macula, which is the area of the eye that is responsible for sharp, detailed vison, color perception and intensity.

Exogenous endophthalmitis occurs when the infection of the inside of the eye comes from outside of the body, such as after eye surgery, trauma, or a penetrating foreign body.

Treatment for diabetic retinopathy is determined by the stage of the disease and the complications involved. There are two categories of diabetic retinopathy: non-proliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

General Surgery
The physicians at The National Retina Institute have access to an on-location surgery center for emergent retina surgical services, The Dulaney Eye Institute. The Dulaney Eye Institute is a short walk down the hall from our Towson location. The Dulaney Eye Institute is staffed with an ophthalmology-specific surgical care team. Our physicians also provide surgical services at several hospitals in the Baltimore Metropolitan area.
