Although every patient and family member wants to know the answer to this question, the reason people develop cancer is not well understood. There are some known carcinogens (materials that can cause cancer), but many are still undiscovered. We do not know why some people who are exposed to carcinogens get cancer and others do not. The length and amount of exposure are believed to affect the chances of developing a disease. For example, as exposure to cigarette smoking increases, the chance of developing lung cancer also increases. Genetics also plays an important role in whether an individual develops cancer. For example, certain types of breast cancer have a genetic component.

We offer medical oncology and hematology, radiation oncology, PET/CT scan, MRI and CT scan, ultrasound, digital mammography, chemotherapy infusion, pharmacy and lab services.Â

Acupuncture provides a holistic perspective for patients at the cancer center. Through the practice of both acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, this program offers a complementary approach to help manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation and alleviate some of the dis-ease and stress, both physical and emotional, that cancer patients experience. Group treatments are available Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM, by appointment.

Karen has made enormous contributions to patient care efforts here, earning her Nurse of the Year recognition. She specializes in medical and radiation oncology nursing.Â Karen understands the key to recovery is establishing relationships with patients, and supporting them throughout their illness.Â

For patients, both men and women, in active treatment. Come and receive free instructions on coping with the appearance-related side effects of your treatment. A licensed beauty professional will teach skin care tips to help achieve healthier skin, and will also provide suggestions for using wigs and headwear. A complimentary skin care kit will be provided. 2nd month of every month, 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm. Hosted by Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center.
