Labor and Delivery
Pelvic floor muscles are responsible for supporting the bladder, rectum, and uterus. With age, gravity, and stretching caused by childbirth these muscles can weaken leading to urinary leakage, fecal leakage, and prolapse. Conversely, the pelvic floor muscles can be too tight resulting in abdominal pain or pain with intimacy. Physical therapists trained in women’s health can train the pelvic floor muscles granting relief and potentially avoiding surgery.

A 63 y/o female who had a Left Total Knee Replacement on 11/8/11. She was evaluated at Melanie Massey Physical Therapy on 11/17/11.This patient presented in the clinic at the time of the evaluation with （ncreased swelling and pain in her left knee, ‥ecreased strength and motion in the left lower extremity, and difficulty walking. She stated at the time of the evaluation that her walking, transfers, and squatting were limited due to her complaints.

Sports Medicine
MMPT provides PT, OT, and Speech Therapy services to adults. In the adult arena, the services range from orthopedic issues (total joint replacements, ankle sprains, back and neck pain) to sports injuries (rotator cuff repair, ACL rehab, etal) to neurological rehabilitation (stroke, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis.) Because MMPT has four locations and over 30 therapists, there is almost always a therapist who can specifically and expertly handle the problem at hand. There are therapists with certification and specialization in the hand, spine (both neck and back), and lower extremity at MMPT. This is a rarity among therapists, and Becky Sherwin, PT, COMT, is the only IAOM Certified therapist in the state of Louisiana. Amy Colvin, OT, Certified Hand Therapist, is one of few in the state as well. Melanie Massey, PT, has been a physical therapist for 19 years and has always had her focus as neurological rehabilitation, i.e. strokes and brain injuries. She is also trained in Women’s Health, making her a very rare practitioner in northeast Louisiana, addressing male and female incontinence and pelvic pain.
