Tarter is a combination of bacteria and plaque that accumulates on dog or cat teeth. Nutritional Counseling
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy ( HCM ) is by far the most common heart disease of cats. It involves the thickening of the heart muscle which hinders filling and relaxation of the muscle and therefore hinders the efficiency of the heart to contract. There are several breeds that have an increased prevalence to develop HCM including Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Persian, Sphynx, British Shorthair, Chartreux and Sphynx cats. In some breeds, there are genetic tests for markers that can show and increase chance of developing the disease and therefore could indicate closer monitoring for disease. Symptoms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy include difficult or rapid breathing, lethargy, collapse, decrease activity, decreased appetite, weight loss, and even hind end paralysis or sudden death from blood clots. Less than 50% of cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have a heart murmur. Also of all cats that have heart murmurs on 30% have any type of cardiomyopathy. Blood tests that assess liver, kidney and thyroid function and blood pressure assessment are essential to correctly diagnosing and managing the treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography is the mainstay of diagnosis, since it is the only modality that can measure heart muscle thickness in real time throughout the different phases of contraction. It is also important in assessing the risk of blood clots forming in the heart which can pass to other areas of the body. Depending on the severity of disease, treatments can be used to control heart rate, treat lung congestion and decrease the likelihood of clot formation.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Heartworms are parasitic worms transmitted by mosquitoes that live in the arteries, lungs and hearts of cats, dogs and other animals. Heartworm disease is a very serious and widespread condition that poses a danger to all cats, regardless of their lifestyles and living conditions. While many people are under the assumption that indoor cats are not at risk for heartworms, a study recently showed that a quarter of all heartworm-positive cats are actually indoor cats. Therefore, we strongly encourage monthly heartworm preventative for all cats. Once a cat is infected, there is no known treatment, so monthly heartworm prevention is key. There are two options available for our cats, a once a month chew or a once a month topical medication.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
The FVRCP cat vaccine is our “feline distemper” vaccination that protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calici virus and panleukopenia. These diseases are highly contagious among cats and can have devastating effects on their respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Our feline patients should receive this vaccine when they are kittens, starting at six weeks of age. This vaccination should be given every two to four weeks until the kitten is 16 weeks old. After the kitten vaccines, we administer this vaccine one year later and once every three years afterward.
Pain Management
In addition to constant supervision by the surgery technician and veterinarian, your pet will also be monitored with state-of-the-art equipment. Depending on the procedure, these include a pulse oximeter, which measures heart rate and oxygen concentration levels, an ECG to monitor heart activity, a non-invasive blood pressure monitor and internal temperature. Our patients are kept on heated surgery tables for increased patient comfort and quicker recovery. Rest assured, only the safest, most effective and latest anesthetic and pain-control protocols are utilized.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Veterinarians learn a great deal of information about your puppies brain, spinal cord, eyes, ears, skin and coat, heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, bladder, nutritional status and more from the physical exam.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Bordetella, also known as kennel cough, is a very common and contagious illness that affects the canine respiratory system. The bordetella dog vaccine is administered intranasally during the first puppy visit. The intranasal vaccine is then given every six months.
Intestinal Foreign Object Removal
Unfortunately, sometimes our pets eat things that they are not supposed to. This can lead to a blockage of the stomach or intestine, preventing your pet from keeping down any food or water. Once there is a blockage, surgery is often needed to remove the object.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis, also known as lepto, is a bacterial disease that can affect both humans and pets. It occurs all over the world and leads to liver and kidney damage, as well as death if left untreated. Humans and pets can get this bacterial infection by coming into contact with infected wild animals (e.g., opossums, skunks, raccoons and rodents), lepto-infested water or infected urine. Since this disease can harm animals and humans, we highly encourage dogs to receive this immunization. They receive the initial vaccine at 9 weeks old and then again two to four weeks later. The adult booster shot is given annually.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
We recommend all kittens be tested for Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline immunodeficiency Virus at their initial health assessment. This test just requires a few drops of blood and the results take about 10 minutes. These viruses can be transmitted directly from the mother or from other cats in the environment. We recommend testing again once they are over one year old, as the virus can take a few weeks to be detectable if they were exposed right before their kitten test. After that second test as an adult, further testing is based on your cat’s lifestyle. Outdoor cats are more likely to be in contact with unknown cats and getting into fights. We typically recommend testing after any unknown fight and ideally once a year. Our indoor only cats, we only recommend if there was a potential exposure to unknown cats.

Heart Disease Treatment
Our Sarasota animal hospital veterinarian, Dr. Edward Cole, has over 25 years of experience treating dog and cat heart disease. Although X-rays and Ekgs are important in diagnosing and managing some heart diseases, echocardiography (or an Echo for short) is the mainstay of diagnosis for the vast majority of heart diseases in our cat and dog patients. Echocardiography is safe and painless and is a highly informative modality in treating our veterinary pet patients with cardiac issues. Echocardiography uses high frequency sound to image the structure and function of the heart in real-time. A small hand held probe is gently placed on the chest and delivers the sound waves through the body to the heart muscle and valves. Some of that sound is reflected back to the probe that stimulate crystals that are translated into an electric current that is processed using complex computer algorithms to form a high definition moving picture of the heart. This image gives the veterinarian a view of the heart chambers, how much they contract, and the valves that separate the chambers and vessels coming from the heart

This is cleaning the area under the gum line. This is the most important step in our animal patients. The subgingival plaque and calculus is what causes periodontal disease. This is the most common ailment diagnosed in ALL veterinary patients.

Dr. Edward Cole has lived in Florida for 40 plus years. He was raised in Lakeland, Florida where he started working at a veterinary hospital when he was 9 years old. He graduated from Lakeland Senior High School with high honors and headed to the University of Florida where he became the youngest person accepted into the veterinary school. He graduated Summa Cum Laude. At the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, he met Jeanette (The other Dr. Cole) in the same class and their fondness of animals drew them together; they have been together ever since. His special veterinary interests include cardiology, surgery, dermatology, oncology ( cancer treatment), ultrasound and echocardiography.

Wound and Fracture Care

Laboratory Services
Your pet’s health is first thoroughly assessed by the doctor’s exam and blood work, to determine if they are able to tolerate anesthesia. A catheter is placed into their vein (IV catheter) to deliver the safest forms of anesthesia, as well as IV fluids that support blood pressure during their procedure. If significant gingivitis is present, an injectable dose of antibiotics will be given prior to the procedure to protect the bloodstream and begin the healing phase. In most cases, only a light plane of general anesthesia is required. Once under general anesthesia, a complete exam of the mouth will be done; looking for pockets of bone loss around teeth, loose or broken teeth and any abnormal growths. The entire crown of each tooth is cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler, and then a sub-gingival cleaning is done to remove the bacteria and plaque under the gum line. When all the debris has been removed, the crown of each tooth receives both a polishing and a fluoride treatment. It is also recommended to apply a sealant to the enamel to aid with its protection.
X-Ray
I nstant Digital Radiology Suite- Our Animal Hospital is equipped with Digital Radiography which allows aquisition of X-rays within seconds. If needed these X-rays can be sent through the internet for a second opinion from a board certified radiologist within minutes. The clarity and contrast is much superior to traditional X-ray equipment.
Dental Radiology
We recommend x-rays of your dog's or cat's entire mouth for every dental procedure; just like your dentist does for you. Veterinary dental X-rays are a vital tool for proper dental health assessment and are necessary to determine an appropriate treatment plan for our dog and cat patients. Because 50% of each tooth is below the gum line, it is impossible to properly examine the entire tooth any other way. X-rays will uncover any hidden painful disease, such as tooth root abscesses, fractures, bone loss and cystic lesions, so that they can be corrected during the procedure. Veterinary dental x-rays are especially imperative in pets due to their high tolerance of pain and inability to communicate it. We often do not realize how much dental pain is affecting our pets until we see their improvement after the procedure.
Microchipping
While your pet is recovering from anesthesia, it is the ideal time to have other minor procedures performed, such as toe nail trims, ear cleanings or microchip implantation that we offer at a discounted price. We highly recommend all pets be microchipped. A HomeAgain microchip will ensure easy identification if your pet is ever lost or stolen and cannot be removed like a collar. Living in Florida, there is always a risk of hurricanes, making microchipping even more important if you were to be separated from your pet.
