Child Support
Child support may be ordered by the Court until the supported child turns 18, and is not a full-time high school student, turns 19, marries or registers in a domestic partnership, emancipates, or passes away, whichever occurs first.Â There are special cases when support may be ordered for a longer period of time, such as when the child has a disability and that child is not self-supporting.Â Parents may also agree to a support order that is longer in duration than the limit set by law.

Spousal Support
A proceeding for divorce is often begun through the filing of a divorce petition which states the relevant facts of the marriage, such as the date of marriage and the number of children from the marriage. If a court determines that there is a reasonable possibility of reconciliation (thereby not finding irreconcilable differences), the court may continue the proceeding for a period of up to 30 days. In certain situations, such as where there are no children of the marriage, the marriage was not longer than 5 years, and neither spouse has an interest in real property, the marriage may be dissolved by summary dissolution. However, this comes with various waivers, such as any right to spousal support.
Legal Separation
Under some circumstances, a viable alternative to the dissolution of a marriage ( divorce ) or domestic partnership termination is legal separation. Legal separation is sometimes a solution for couples that are questioning whether or not a divorce is what they really want. Legal separation may also be a good alternative for spouses or domestic partners that do not want their marital status or domestic partnership to be severed for religious, financial, or other personal reasons. Spouses retain their status as married even if legal separation is completed. In other circumstances, legal separation is the only option for an initial filing of a case because the parties are unable to meet the residency requirements for the state of California or the County in which they currently reside. Annulment
An annulment is a Judgeâ€™s declaration that an original marriage was invalid or null and void. Itâ€™s very difficult to establish an annulment, as a couple must prove a few specific scenarios, including incest or bigamy, force or fraud, physical or mental incapacity, or age issues.
Child Abuse
Continuing contact between both parents and the child.Â There are cases, however, when such an arrangement may not be appropriate.Â For example, contact with a parent may be limited when it is found by the Court that it is not in the childâ€™s best interests, such as in circumstances of domestic violence, child abuse, sex abuse, and/or alcohol or substance abuse.Â Addiction issues must be carefully analyzed to ensure the safety of a child.

Restraining Order
Every child deserves and is entitled to receive financial support from his or her parents.
