Primary Care
Due to our efficient workflow processes, a screening 3D mammogram takes less than 30 minutes from check-in to exam completion. And, to make this important screening more convenient many of our offices are open on evenings and Saturdays, same-day appointments are available and walk-ins are welcome at many locations. While patients must have seen a primary care doctor in the past 18 months, a signed physician referral is not required for this annual exam.

Immunizations
Some patients may be injected with Glucagon, a synthetic hormone that reduces motion within the bowel for about 60 minutes. Bowel motion can cause significant blurring of images in the abdomen and pelvis, potentially rendering images useless. The injection is given in the muscles of the arm, much like an immunization. This drug may induce hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in patients approximately 90 minutes after injection, causing some nausea, dizziness, and trembling. Because eating can prevent these symptoms nearly completely, patients are required to eat chocolate, or other forms of sugar, prior to leaving the facility. Patients are also instructed to eat a meal soon after the examination. Diabetics will typically not be given this injection, so please inform the staff if you have this condition.

Gynecology
The ultrasound procedure involves passing a device called a transducer over the skin of the area to be examined. A series of images are produced and analyzed by an experienced radiologist. Wake Radiology routinely utilizes state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment, which allows for the production of high-quality images for medical diagnosis over a wide range of anatomical areas and clinical indications, including abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology, vascular, musculoskeletal, and other soft tissues of the body. Each location where ultrasound services are offered is accredited by the American College of Radiology. Our diagnostic medical sonographers are highly skilled professionals who have earned and who maintain their certification with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

A number of different conditions can result in the formation of mineral deposits such as calcium in the collecting system of the kidneys where urine is formed. Patients who develop stones can suffer symptoms such as back pain, nausea, and vomiting. When the stones block the flow of urine, urine can back up, causing abnormal pressure on the kidney and risking a decrease in kidney function. Interventional radiologists can help in the treatment of kidney stones either by placement of a nephrostomy catheter for relief of urinary obstruction or a nephroureteral catheter to be used by the urologist for access during a stone removal surgery.

A diagnostic ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body to produce images of soft tissues and internal organs. Ultrasound enables the radiologist to make an accurate diagnosis of numerous medical conditions and diseases without the use of surgery or radiation by providing a clear window into the human body.
MRI
Some of the latest advancements in imaging have occurred in MRI of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis, or “Body MRI.” Tumors sometimes can be classified as benign or malignant solely upon the information provided by MRI.

Mammography
Our Smithfield Mammography office is located on Venture Drive just down the road from Carolina Premium Outlets and across the street from Kobe Steak House. The office is easily accessible from I-95 and Brightleaf Boulevard.
Computed Tomography
A painless, convenient CT scan shows the amount of calcified (hard) plaque in the heart vessels. This level of calcium relates to plaque build-up in your arteries. Plaque in the arteries can cause heart attacks.
Chemotherapy
When chemotherapy, IV nutrition, or long-term IV antibiotics are needed, a port or other long-term venous access catheter is placed. Wake Radiology Interventional Physicians use imaging guidance and minimally-invasive techniques to place these catheters without the need for surgery. Patients are given local anesthetic and usually a relaxing medication. Through a small incision, the port is placed under the skin, usually in the right side of the chest. It is attached to a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) that is guided (threaded) into a large vein above the right side of the heart called the superior vena cava. A needle is inserted through the skin into the port to draw blood or give fluids and other treatments. The catheter may stay in place for many weeks, months, or years.
Radiation Therapy
The majority of patients with cancer that has spread to the bones suffer with some degree of pain. When cancer has spread to the bones, treatment is focused on alleviating patients’ symptoms, rather than trying to cure the cancer. Radiation therapy provided by radiation oncologists is the standard treatment for painful bone tumors. However, sometimes radiation can no longer be given due to certain limitations. Interventional Radiologists can treat painful bone tumors with minimally-invasive image-guided techniques such as radiofrequency (RF) ablation. During RF ablation procedures, patients are sedated, and imaging guidance such a CT scanning is used to allow the Interventional Radiologist to position a probe (or thick needle) into the tumor. Radiofrequency energy is applied, thereby heating the tumor and killing tumor cells. If stabilization of the weakened bone is needed, a bone cement can be injected in conjunction with RF ablation to attempt to minimize the risk of a fracture later. RF ablation procedures are frequently performed on an outpatient basis, during which patients are discharged several hours after the procedure.

Hysterectomy
Procedures in order to stop the hemorrhage and potentially avoid the need for a major surgery / hysterectomy. In the Interventional Radiology suite, a small skin puncture is made and a thin catheter is maneuvered under fluoroscopic x-ray guidance into the blood vessels that supply the uterus. Small medical particles are injected into the blood vessels in order to stop the bleeding.
