Dental problems are a challenging and important part of routine care and medical care in equine practice. Floating, the routine filing of horses' teeth every year to year and a half maximizes a horse's ability to chew his food and respond to the bit. Read More →
Vaccination
Preventing problems before they start is key to enjoying your horse for as long as you can. Routine Vaccination, Worm control, Dentals, Lameness prevention for active and older horses and Chronic Lameness Management are all part of wellness care for your horse.
Comprehensive Examination
A pre-purchase exam is a complete physical and lameness evaluation performed by a veterinarian for a potential buyer of a horse. The purpose is to determine what if any health or lameness problems the horse has today and what problems it may develop in the future. People often say that a horse either passed or failed a pre-purchase examination. This is not the case. THE PRE-PURCHASE EXAM IS NOT A PASS / FAIL SITUATION. With the exception of 2 horses, I have found some problem worth discussing with the potential buyer in every pre-purchase exam I have performed. Rather, at the end of the exam, the potential buyer must determine if they can live with the problems I have found or if they cannot live with those problems. If they can, they buy the horse. The veterinarian will often provide a letter describing the results of his exam after it is completed. In my practice, I carry a computer and printer in my vehicle so results can be printed and handed to the buyer on the spot.
The leading cause of premature death in horses is colic. The leading cause of colic is parasites. All horses are regularly infected with parasites. Colic is a broad term for abdominal pain that can range from a little gas to full blown twisted intestine. It has been shown over and over in numerous studies at various places that the incidence of colic is decreased dramatically when a strong, effective parasite control program is instituted. This means a good parasite control program can help prevent your horse from suffering from serious illness or even death.
Pain Management
Treatments can vary from the simplest pain medication such as Bute, to very leading edge treatments using stem cells.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Skin conditions are common issues in equine practice. Among those brought to my attention are Ear Plaques and Sarcoid Tumors. Read More
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Respiratory disease symptoms often jump from horse to horse and can hijack a whole barn over the course of a few weeks or months. While treating each horse is usually successful the answer to the question, “What is causing this?” is usually elusive.
You may be wondering why, if a foot abscess is a bacterial infection, it’s not treated with antibiotics. The reason is that circulation to the foot and antibiotic penetration of an abscess is poor. As a result, antibiotics cannot reach high enough levels in the abscess to eliminate the infection. If antibiotics are used they will only suppress the abscess, which will reappear once they are withdrawn. There are always some exceptions to this premise but they must be considered on a case by case basis.
There are four joints in the hock. Bone spavin is a fancy term for osteoarthritis of the bottom two hock joints. Ninety percent of the range of motion in the hock comes from the top joint. In bone spavin, the affected joints are the bottom two joints, which are flat joints. They do not need to flex in order for the horse to move normally. If the joints fuse, the pain resolves completely.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
The lameness exam is a process of elimination. Beginning with looking at the whole horse the scope of the examination is reduced to a smaller and smaller area until the source of pain is located. Dr. Novick brings a vast experience in sports medicine and lameness with more than three decades of experience treating patients and as an active competitor himself.
Thyroid Disease Treatment
Is your horse always a little lethargic. Does it have a cresty neck. Has it foundered? These are among the signs of a hormone deficiency known as hypothyroidism. Read More
Kidney Disease Treatment
Another compelling reason for using Equioxx paste is the nature of the drug itself. It is a COX-2 selective inhibitor. Why this is important is that all the other NSAIDS currently permitted, like Bute and Banamine block both the COX-1 and COX-2 pathways when administered. Blocking the COX-2 pathway is what you want; it relieves pain and reduces inflammation. Blocking the COX-1 pathway can potentially harm your horse resulting in increases risks of side effects such as gastric ulcers, intestinal inflammation and kidney disease. Equioxx blocks only the COX-2 pathway and not the COX-1 pathway.
The potential buyer may also elect to have blood tests run on the horse. A complete blood count, which checks for anemia and infections, and a chemistry profile, which checks for indications of liver, kidney or muscle disease, are two of the simplest tests to run.
