General Info
The California Charities Foundation and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation are both independent private philanthropies that operate separately from the Hearst Foundation, Inc. The charitable goals of the foundations are essentially the same and reflect the philanthropic interests of Hearst education, health, social service and culture. Within these four areas, the foundations assist institutions to provide opportunities to underserved and underrepresented populations. Hearst founded the Hearst Foundation in 1945 and established the California Charities Foundation in 1948. That name was changed to the William Randolph Hearst Foundation soon after Hearst s death in 1951. The two foundations are administered from their headquarters in New York. Their San Francisco office reviews requests from organizations located west of the Mississippi River.
