Rheumatoid arthritis is a major crippling disorder, and perhaps the most serious form of arthritis. It is a complex, chronic inflammatory group of diseases, often affecting more than a dozen smaller joints during its course. It frequently occurs in both ankles, and/or the index fingers of both hands.
Plantar Fasciitis
A variety of injuries can occur as a result of martial arts and kick boxing. These include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, sesamoiditis, and ankle sprains. Stretching is recommended for a minimum of 15 minutes before performing any kicking or punching.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The posterior tibial nerve is the nerve that runs along the inside of the ankle into the foot. Compression or squeezing of this nerve produce symptoms anywhere along the path of the nerve. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is similar to carpal tunnel in the wrist as both disorders stem from nerve compression in a confined space.

There are early treatments which may ease the pain of bunions, but they will not reverse the deformity itself.
Ingrown Toenails
Mild ingrown toenails may be treated with conservative measures like warm daily soaks, avoidance of tight or ill-fitting shoes, elevating the foot, topical antibiotics like Neosporin, and gently pushing back the piece of overgrown skin away from the nail.

Corns
Corns are calluses that form on the toes because the bones push up against the shoe and put pressure on the skin. The surface layer of the skin thickens and builds up, irritating the tissues underneath. Hard corns are usually located on the top of the toe or on the side of the small toe. Soft corns resemble open sores and develop between the toes as they rub against each other. Improperly fitting shoes are a leading cause of corns. Toe deformities, such as hammertoe or claw toe, also can lead to corns. In a visit to our office, your corns can be shaved with a scalpel. Self care includes soaking your feet regularly and using a pumice stone or callus file to soften and reduce the size of the corn. Special over-the-counter non-medicated donut-shaped foam pads also can help relieve the pressure.

Calluses have painful nerves and bursal sacs (fluid-filled balloons that act as shock absorbers) beneath them, causing symptoms ranging from sharp, shooting pain to dull, aching soreness.
Eczema
Not all fungus conditions lead to Athlete’s foot, however. Other conditions, such as malfunctions of the sweat mechanism, reaction to dyes or adhesives in shoes, eczema, and psoriasis, also may mimic Athlete’s foot.
Fungus
Athlete’s foot is a skin disease caused by a fungus, usually occurring between the toes. The fungus usually attacks the feet because shoes create a warm, dark, and humid environment that encourages fungus growth.
Lesions
These are lesions that usually cause pain and stiffness of the ankle joint and affect all age groups. Often, osteochondritis follows a twisting type injury to the ankle.
Psoriasis
The warmth and dampness of areas around swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms are also breeding grounds for fungi. Not all fungus conditions lead to Athlete’s foot, however. Other conditions, such as malfunctions of the sweat glands, reaction to dyes or adhesives in shoes, eczema, and psoriasis also may have symptoms similar to Athlete’s Foot.

Treatments include metatarsal pads, orthotics, cortisone injections, and physical therapy. Surgery to remove the pinched portion of the nerve is the last resort, but is very effective to completely rid your foot completely of pain. This is especially true for people that have been having their pain for more than a year and for whom conservative treatment has not helped much.

Ankle sprains are caused by an unnatural twisting or force on the ankle bones of the foot, often resulting in one or more ligaments on the outside of the ankle being stretched or torn. If not properly treated, ankle sprains can develop into long-term problems.
Bunions Problems
It is the enlargement of the fifth metatarsal bone (the metatarsals are the five long bones of the foot) at the base of the little toe. Often tailor’s bunions are caused by inherited faulty mechanical foot structure. The fifth metatarsal bone begins to protrude outward and the little toe moves inward which creates the bump on the outside of the foot. This shift creates a bump on the outside of the foot that becomes irritated whenever a shoe presses against it. Shoes that are too narrow in the toe, cause redness, swelling and pain due to the constant rubbing and pressure. Wearing tight shoes can progressively worsen the deformity.

When the hammertoe has become more rigid, surgery is needed to relieve the pain. Dr. Hausen will evaluate your condition, carefully examine your x-rays and select a plan tailored to your needs.

Plantar faciitis is the inflammation of the ligament that attaches from the ball of the foot to the heel bone. This strong and tight tissue supports the arch of the foot. It is also one of the major transmitters of weight across the foot as you walk or run. Therefore, the stress placed on this tissue is tremendous. Heel spurs are the deposits of calcium that form when the plantar fascia pulls away from the heel area, causing a bony protrusion, or heel spur to develop.

Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed if an infection is present. Part of your ingrown toenail may need to be surgically removed if an acute infection occurs. The procedure involves injecting the toe with an anesthetic and cutting out the ingrown part of the toenail.
Foot Neuroma

Over-the-counter foot wart treatments are usually ineffective because their use can inadvertently destroy surrounding healthy tissue. Our practice can treat warts in a variety of ways.
Plantar Fasciitis
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy is a non invasive treatment that involves the delivery of sound energy or shock waves to the tissue that is affected by plantar fasciitis initiating a healing response by the body. This healing response causes increased delivery of nutrients to the affected area. The microtrauma is thought to stimulate a repair process and relieve the symptoms of plantar fasciitis.
Podiatric Deformities
Anything that compresses or irritates the nerve can lead to a neuroma. High-heeled or narrow shoes, foot deformities such as bunions or hammertoes, flat feet or more flexible feet increase, the risk of developing a Morton’s neuroma. Certain activities such as running or racquet sports are also potential causes of developing a Morton’s neuroma due to the repetitive irritation to the ball of the foot. An injury or other type of trauma to the area may also lead to a neuroma.
