Bladder control or urinary incontinence (UI) is an issue for millions of Americans. While it is common as we age, incontinence can occur in people of all ages. Women are twice as likely as men to experience UI. UI is characterized by the inability to control the flow of urine. During an episode of incontinence, a small amount of urine (just a few drops) is passed, or a strong and extremely sudden urge to urinate is sensed followed by losing a large amount of urine. As reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and the University of Washington at Seattle evaluated whether low testosterone levels are a risk factor for mortality in male veterans. They studied the relationship between hormone levels and death in a total of 858 males over the age of 40. All participants received care in the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and had their testosterone levels checked at least twice between 1994 and 1999, with no more than two years elapsing between testing. These men were followed for average period of 4.3 years, with some followed for the full eight years of the study. None of the men had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Weight gain, hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia are the most common symptoms of hormone imbalance that Dr Smolenski sees in women presenting to Coastal Medical Clinic. Weight gain associated with thyroid disease, adrenal fatigue, menopause and perimenopause is often misdiagnosed and is one of the first signs of hormone imbalance. Many women have desperately tried to lose weight - but failed - because no one has ever taken the time to listen to their concerns and make the connection to hormone imbalance. These signs of menopause, perimenopause and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are also affected by stress, nutritional deficiencies, physical conditioning and environmental toxins that we are exposed to everyday.

Vitamin D is the only vitamin that is also a hormone. After Vitamin D is made by your skin or eaten, the kidneys and liver convert it into an active hormone. As a hormone, it controls calcium absorption to build strong bones and teeth, and helps to maintain muscle strength. When your vitamin D levels are low, your bones break down to supply calcium to the rest of your body. Most people living in the South Carolina can get enough vitamin D by getting about 10-15 minutes of sun exposure on their arms and face a few times a week -- as long as they don't use sunscreen, which blocks some of the UV rays necessary to make the vitamin. Since darker skin pigment reduces the skin's ability to synthesize vitamin D by 95%, darker skinned people need 5-10 times as much sun exposure to synthesize enough vitamin D. As long as sun exposure is for short periods of time it will not increase the risk of serious skin cancer such as melanoma.

The typical gut problem often begins because of the over-production of cortisol, due to stress.
