Viscosupplementation for arthritis of the knee is a hyaluronic acid injection into the knee that allows for better gliding and less friction and wear to the joint cartilage. Currently, the FDA only approves Viscosupplementation injections into the knee. There are many different brands, including Synvisc, Hyalgan, Euflexxa, and Orthovisc. These are usually injected between one and three times over a three week period to allow for improved function and reduced pain. It is generally recommended to try corticosteroids and/or Viscosupplementation before proceeding with total knee arthroplasty. If good relief is found, the patient can return and have the series of injections repeated as close together as six months at a time.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve at the wrist. It is a common problem seen in repetitive type use syndrome. Mild situations can be treated with anti inflammatories or wrist splinting, while advanced stages will most commonly require surgical release. Surgery will take pressure off the nerve. It takes several weeks to heal and will usually require physical therapy to improve range of motion and strength after the operation.

Ultrasound
Elbow arthroscopy can be used for many factors, including bone spurs, damaged cartilage, as well as releasing the tendon with tennis elbow. The procedure is minimally invasive and is usually treated through two to four arthroscopic portals. One is used for the camera to enable direct visualization. Additional portals are used for placement of shavers as well as high-frequency ultrasound devices to remove inflammation, release the capsule, remove loose bodies, and remove spurs in the elbow.
MRI
ACL and PCL injuries occur through a direct blow to the knee and/or a rotational injury. Oftentimes it can occur through a non-contact type of injury. These are usually verified through MRI studies. Arthroscopically assisted ACL or PCL reconstruction is done using the scope as well as instruments that are placed arthroscopically to recreate tunnels and anatomic locations of the affected ligaments. Both tissue from the patient as well as allograft tissue from a cadaver can be used to reconstruct these ligaments. The preferred method should be discussed with your surgeon. Bone-patellar tendon-bone is typically considered the gold standard in the industry and allows for good bony healing in the tunnels as well as restoration of stability to the joint through the patellar tendon. Several months of healing and therapy are required before returning to general activities, including athletic endeavors.

The term orthopaedics was coined in 1741 by a man named Nicholas Andry. The term is derived from the Greek words orthos (straight) and paedia (children), because the profession originally specialized in treating children with deformities. Today, orthopedics has become the standardized spelling in the United States, while organizations such as the AAOS as well as the majority of university and residency programs use Andry’s original spelling.
Arthroscopy
Ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows for good visualization of the ankle joint, and it is generally used to remove inflammation and treat cartilage injuries of the ankle joint. Typically two small incisions are used in the anterior portion of the ankle joint. Immobilization is usually required for the first two weeks after surgery with non-weight bearing and crutches. After sutures are removed, physical therapy is used to help restore range of motion and improve strength.
Arthroscopy
Wrist arthroscopy is a common procedure that can be used in conjunction with fixation of wrist fractures to treat cartilage injuries as well as treatment of the triangular fibrocartilage complex. If conservative measures fail after wrist pain or injury, additional methods of physical therapy and injection can be used. If all these do not result in minimized pain, the wrist can be visited arthroscopically and synovectomy, chondroplasty, and cartilage debridement can be performed.
Knee Arthroscopy
Knee arthroscopy for meniscectomy is a common procedure performed today as a result of a twisting injury to the knee. The meniscus is an elastic type of cartilage that allows for a shock absorber effect to the knee to try to prevent injury to the joint cartilage. A tear, depending on the configuration, can cause popping, catching, and locking or simply pain and swelling with weight bearing activities. Knee arthroscopy allows for good visualization of the entry, and instruments are available to trim and remove the area that is injured without removing the entire meniscus that was performed many years ago through an open procedure. Return to full activity is generally three to six weeks post-operatively after physical therapy for range of motion and strengthening.

Physical Therapy
Ankle fractures are a common injury from either a direct blow or a twisting type injury with a foot fixed on the ground. Ankle fractures come in a variety of displacements, including injury to the inside or outside of the ankle extending up into the shin bone. Oftentimes with minimal to no displacement, casting or brace placement is appropriate. With displacement or marked comminution, open reduction with internal fixation with plates and screws is typically used. Other methods of treatment include: rods, external pins, or fixation. Generally ankle fractures heal well enough over a six to twelve week period to allow for full weight bearing, although it may take several months of physical therapy for range of motion and strengthening to allow for a return to full activity.
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is a condition that includes irritation or partial tearing of the origin of the extensor muscles from the lateral aspect of the elbow. This can result as either a traumatic injury or a repetitive use. Initial treatments include rest with ice and anti inflammatories. If this does not resolve the issue, often times Cortical(?) steroids can be injected into the area that is most tender. If several months of conservative treatment fail, surgical repair as well as debridement may be required.

Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendon injuries are seen most often in the middle age group due to persisting sporting activities without proper warm up or stretching. Achilles tendon injuries can occur through multiple other traumatic type injuries as well. It will generally require a lengthy period of immobilization and/or surgical repair. MRIs are ordered to view the extent of the injury as well as the amount of tendon retraction. If surgical repair is instituted, the tendon is reapproximated and held in place with heavy, non-absorbable sutures and/or suture anchors. Gradual changes in the degree of ankle flexion are performed to allow for slow stretching of the Achilles tendon after repair. Extensive physical therapy for range of motion and strengthening is generally required.
