Pain Management

Arthritis Treatment
These conditions will start to become more prevalent as your pet gets older. For this reason, we recommend twice-yearly veterinary visits for pets over 8 years of age. Your aging pet may be showing early signs of osteoarthritis such as stiffness after rest or play, difficulty going up or downstairs, and reduced activity. Early intervention with joint supplements and prescription arthritis medications when indicated, along with modified nutrition and exercise plans, can greatly improve your pet’s comfort and mobility. Likewise, performing annual screening lab work on your older pet can help identify early stages of medical problems that might go unrecognized, and progress significantly without treatment.

Heartworm is another important endoparasite, but one which is not zoonotic. Heartworm infections result from pets being bitten by infected mosquitos. The larval form of the heartworm travels through the bloodstream to the heart where it develops into an adult. The adult heartworms live in the right side of the heart and left untreated, result in progressive heart failure and death. In initial stages of heartworm disease, pets may be asymptomatic. As the condition progresses, symptoms may evolve including a cough and exercise intolerance in dogs, and vomiting/coughing in cats. Treatment of heartworm disease can be very risky for the pet, and very costly.

Any pre-surgical testing that is recommended – baseline laboratory testing is beneficial so that there are no surprises on surgery day. Knowing that your pet has normal blood test results can help prevent anesthetic complications or surgical complications such as excessive bleeding, which can occur when patients have low platelet counts or abnormal clotting. When there is liver or kidney disease, this may affect the choices of anesthetic drugs recommended by your veterinarian, to prevent anesthetic complications and promote a smooth anesthetic recovery.

Since her early teen years, Samantha’s dream was to be a large animal veterinarian. This fascination began when she started working at an alpaca farm in her small town in Massachusetts. She worked there for a couple years and this blossomed her career in the animal medical field. During high school, she interned at her first small animal practice, which turned into the first practice she was employed. Samantha then realized she wanted to work in a small animal practice with dogs, cats, and various furry and feathery creatures. Samantha has now worked in the veterinary field for almost 7 years, starting out as a kennel attendant to veterinary assistant and is working her way towards being a certified veterinary technician. Her passions include exotic medicine, dental surgery and venipuncture.

Rosie is originally from the Netherlands. She and Dr. Tinkham met in 2006 when both worked spaying and neutering cats at the Humane Society for Greater Nashua. They share a passion for animals in general and cats in particular. Rosie worked for MVH previously as a technician, and rejoined the team in 2018 as Dr. Tinkham’s assistant.

Laboratory Services
They undoubtedly saved our Ekkos (Aka Kittens) life. After months of trying everything to control and care for our cats crystals which means urinalysis, blood tests, diet changes, pheromone sprays, increase of enrichment and toys and doing everything we could he blocked. They were able to unblock him. It was touch and go for a bit but unfortunately with the severity and frequency of his blocking (Multiple times in a week while at the hospital, they allowed us to visit him to check up which helped me so much) our options were getting slim. Finally we had to make the hard choice of either doing a PU surgery or euthanasia or just trying to handle him potentially blocking repeatedly (which is painful, dangerous and unethical to force your pet through), we opted to do a PU surgery. A costly surgery that takes a lot of skill. And the surgery team did fantastic. A surgery that although they didn’t do often, they did and helped us every step of the way both before, during and for weeks after surgery. Now we’re over 8 months post operation and our boy is entirely back to himself. He might be missing his junk but he’s just as loving, goofy and playful as he was before. He’s on a prescription diet and as of his last urinalysis had no crystals or anything in his urine. They use the PetDesk App which shows me all his test results right on my phone which has been so helpful during the whole period. They were there constantly giving us support via text and call and gave our little man so much love while he was in their care. And he’s certainly a cat that LOVES love. He’s an attention hog. We had lost our senior dog not even a month before having these issues with him so we were especially sensitive and the staff and doctors were so gentle and kind the whole time. We can’t thank them enough for working with us and helping our boy. Especially during an already hard and painful time of mourning. And we will soon be switching all of our animals care to them.
