Michael Duchowny, M.D., is a board-certified pediatric neurologist working at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Sleep disorders are changes in sleeping patterns or habits that can affect overall health, safety and quality of life. Some of the signs and symptoms of sleep disorders include excessive daytime sleepiness, increased leg movements during sleep, difficulty falling and maintaining sleep, night terrors, apneas or difficulty breathing at night, snoring, behavioral problems, bedwetting, and irregularity in sleep schedule. Commonly diagnosis seen in our office include obstructive sleep apnea, apnea of prematurity, Narcolepsy, Behavioral insomnia, irregular sleep-wake cycle, Insomnia due to medical condition, and central apneas.

Autism
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) include children with difficulties understanding social interactions and with repetitive and restricted behavior and interests. Children with autism spectrum disorders usually have problems in language development and may have repetitive motor activities. They may have specific strengths in certain skills such as working with computers or puzzles, but can struggle with other skills like playing symbolically with toys or interacting with their peers.
Epilepsy
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is a Level 4 Epilepsy Center directed by Dr. Ian Miller. It has provided the most sophisticated level of epilepsy care available to patients for over a quarter century. As a level 4 epilepsy center, it provides the most comprehensive evaluation and treatment for epilepsy using advanced tools and techniques. MRI
Cerebral Palsy is a non-progressive movement disorder that is mostly likely a result of injury to the brain due to trauma or lack of oxygen. In some cases, it can be due to a genetic condition and sometimes the cause is unknown. The diagnosis is usually made by 2 years of age and can be confirmed with imaging studies such as an MRI. Other findings include, but are not limited to, motor skill delay, increased or decreased muscle tone, and increased or decreased reflexes. Many patients can also suffer from vision or hearing impairment, seizures, learning and behavioral problems.
Computed Tomography
Headaches can have many different presentations and many different causes, ranging from the most benign to more serious causes. There are multiple different types of headaches, including migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, and trauma-induced headaches. Headaches can be severe enough to interfere with a patient’s life and make it difficult to complete daily activities. Diagnostic testing for headaches depends on the patient’s history and presentation. Imaging studies, such as CT scans or MRIs, may be ordered, as well as routine lab work.

Damaris Monzon-Aguirre, MSN, ARNP, FNP-C earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (2007) and her Master of Science in Nursing (2014) at Barry University in Miami Shores. After obtaining her BSN she practiced as a registered nurse in an inpatient pediatric neurology and neurosurgery unit at Nicklaus Children's Hospital for over 7 years. Damaris is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and holds an active and clear Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner license in the state of Florida. While obtaining her MSN she worked as a research assistant on projects related to the improvement of undergraduate nursing education and is passionate about providing education and resources to students, patients and families alike. Damaris specializes in a number of neurological disorders and holds special interest in headache management, sleep disorders and developmental disorders. A native of Miami, Damaris resides in Kendall where she enjoys spending quality time with her husband and young son.

Plastic Surgeons

Botox
Many treatments modalities are in place to promote maximum mobility potential. These include muscle relaxants, occupational and physical therapies, intrathecal (spinal) baclofen pumps, Botox injections, and selective dorsal rhizotomy (a surgical procedure). The management of Cerebral Palsy is a lifetime journey and requires a multidisciplinary approach.

Physical Therapists

Occupational Therapy
Interventions for children with ASD include behavioral interventions, known as early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI), applied behavioral analysis (ABA), speech and language therapies, occupational therapy and school based programs. Medications for children with ASD are used only if needed to help a child with specific behaviors that may be interfering with their ability to participate in family or school activities.
