However, these regimens will not treat varicose veins or the underlying disease (venous reflux) and will not prevent varicose veins from worsening. Weight reduction is also helpful. Insurance companies often require some time in use of compression stockings, exercise, trial of anti-inflammatory drugs (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Naproxen), and leg elevation before authorizing treatment. This approach provides an initial conservative measure and attempt at symptom control, however, will not change the underlying problem. At best, they may slow the advances of the complications of chronic vein disease, but will not reverse them.

Pregnancy

Ultrasound
Symptoms of acute phlebitis and blood clots may be non-existent or often very mild, such as red, swollen, tender areas. They can develop silently and grow extensively into deep veins of the leg before being discovered. They often occur in legs that have varicose veins. Swelling or pain in one leg that is not explained by other causes should be investigated promptly with an ultrasound examination. Early diagnosis and treatment is indicated to assure safety and to minimize the late long-term effects on the lower leg.

Ulcer
An ulcer or open sore occurs where normal skin has been destroyed and the deeper tissues under the skin are exposed. Venous stasis ulcers mostly occur in the lower leg between the knee and ankle. Leg ulcers represent the end stages of the disease continuum in those with chronic venous reflux and varicosities. Ulcers are a serious problem and occur in about one of every fifty adults. They constitute a serious cause of loss of time from work and have a major impact on the individual’s quality of life. They can be the late effect of both varicose veins and of blood clots in the leg veins. It has been estimated that the cost of caring for a leg ulcer is in the range of $20,000/year, or a total cost in the USA of about one billion dollars per year to the health care dollar.
