Dental Examination
A patientâ€™s first visit is super important in our prevention-based practice. The team learns patient behaviors and finds a way to win each patientâ€™s trustâ€”whether itâ€™s talking about princesses or superheroes, our team knows whatâ€™s trending among the kids. Then we just â€œcount teeth,â€ but really we are completing a dental exam and checking for tooth decay (cavities.)
X-rays
There is very little risk in dental x-rays. Pediatric dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which children are exposed. Radiographs (x-rays) are a vital and necessary part of your childâ€™s dental diagnostic process. Without them, certain dental conditions can and will be missed. X-rays detect much more than cavities. For example, x-rays may be needed to survey erupting teeth, diagnose bone diseases, evaluate the results of an injury, or plan orthodontic treatment. X-rays allow dentists to diagnose and treat health conditions that cannot be detected during a clinical examination. If dental problems are found and treated early, dental care is more comfortable for your child and more affordable for you.

Teeth Cleaning
The bayâ€”where the team performs your kiddosâ€™ cleanings and examsâ€” caters to children and is designed so your child sees other boys and girls having fun at the dentist. We have an open office policy, where parents are welcome to accompany their children throughout the dental experience, so patient and parent learn about prevention.
Fluoride Treatment
To help in this effort, Sunshine Smiles allows the first visit of any child under age 2 to be seen absolutely FREE OF CHARGE! This initial visit includes a cleaning, fluoride treatment (behavior permitting), x-rays (if needed), and a comprehensive exam. The doctor teaches you how you will brush and floss your kiddosâ€™ teeth every day and watch for potential issues.
Dental Sealants
Sealants act as a barrier to prevent cavities. They protect vulnerable areas by â€œsealing outâ€ plaque, foods, and acid. We paint sealants onto the enamel, where it bonds to the tooth and hardens. While sealants remain intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay for years.

Fillings
Resin Composite
As opposed to silver fillings (amalgams), tooth-colored or natural white-colored restorations provide an aesthetically pleasing smile and new bonding technologies. Composite resins, or tooth-colored fillings, provide durability and resistance to fracture in fillings that need to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing.
Crowns
At Sunshine Smiles, we believe in building a long-lasting smile and confidence in every child, which is why we use tooth-colored fillings and crowns.
Dental Bonding

Orthodontics
Idaigna M. Alvarez, DMD, MS graduated from the University of Puerto Rico Dental School in 1991. After graduating from Dental School she completed her Pediatric/Orthodontics residency at The Childrenâ€™s Hospital of Alabama at Birmingham, where she was valedictorian and served as Chief Resident. She completed a Fellowship in cerebral palsy patient care and was involved in the care of medically compromised and handicapped children. Her program at the University of Alabama included orthodontics and the study of growth and development patterns in children. She received a Masters in Clinical Dentistry in 1994 and moved to Titusville.
