Macular Degeneration
The prevention and early detection of eye disorders is crucial to the quality of your vision. Diseases and eye injuries such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration can be controlled, but once they have done damage to your vision, that damage is largely permanent. For many with a genetic predisposition towards eye disorders or personal vision risk factors such as diabetes or high blood pressure, loss of vision and even blindness are very real threats. The first step to preventing vision loss is to be sure you attend regular eye exams once every two years when you are young, and annually if you are over 45. The Manhasset Eye Physicians have advanced training, high-tech facilities, and the latest equipment for administering the proper treatment, but the first step is always detection and diagnosis.

Cataracts
Cataracts are cloudy regions on the normally transparent lens of the eye. Sometimes, often as a result of age, the proteins in the lens that are normally spread thinly enough to allow light to pass through can clump together. When a protein clump becomes large enough to block the flow of light through the eye, a cataract is formed. Cataracts interfere with vision by distorting the pattern of light that is projected onto the retina, thus decreasing the quality and amount of visual data received by the brain. A cataract can develop in a single eye, though it is more common to have them develop simultaneously in both.
Cataract Surgery
Cataracts are a very common ailment. In fact, more than half of all Americans over the age of 65 have had, or are currently suffering from, a cataract. Our eye doctors are skilled in cataract surgery and can offer you a complete consultation on the pros and cons of the procedure. If your vision is only mildly blurry, we may be able to help you retain much of your vision through the use of prescription eye wear. Delaying cataract surgery until you are certain it is the right choice for you will in no way injure the eye itself. If the cataract has progressed to the point where its presence is decreasing your quality of life, or if it is positioned in such a way that it may prevent examination or treatment of another eye condition, then cataract surgery may be recommended. Our eye physicians respect that the decision to undergo cataract surgery is a highly individualistic one. If you do decide to undergo surgery, we have the necessary experience and skills to perform your procedure. Our practice has performed many successful cataract surgeries over the years.

Dr. Aimee L. Eichen received her bachelor's degree in premedical studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984. A dedicated scholar, she graduated Summa Cum Laude and was elected to the academic society, Phi Beta Kappa. She received her medical doctorate from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1988. Dr. Eichen then trained in Internal Medicine for her internship from 1988-1989 at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, where she was elected Intern of the Year. She completed her residency in ophthalmology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 1992 and was also chief resident. She served as a Resident Instructor for the Long Island Jewish Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology Residency Program at Queens Hospital from 1992 to 1993.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Both floaters and flashes occur more commonly in people who have previously undergone a cataract operation, are nearsighted, or have experienced inflammation in the eye. Although they are usually harmless eye symptoms resulting from age, floaters and flashers may be a sign that something more serious is wrong. For example, the symptoms of a torn retina, which leads to bleeding in the eye and even retinal detachment, can easily be mistaken for new floaters. The presence of eye floaters may also be a sign of diabetic retinopathy, a vascular abnormality resulting in mild hemorrhaging, or a carotid artery disease.

Ultrasound
At Manhasset Eye Physicians, we use a small incision technique that allows for a quick recovery without the use of sutures. Ultrasound equipment is used to break apart the cataract material on the lens. This process is called phacoemulsification. The cataract material is then removed using suction. An IOL or intraocular lens is inserted as a replacement for the part of the lens that was just removed. The IOL bonds to the eye’s remaining natural lens material without stitches, and the incision heals naturally over time. Cataract surgery can usually be completed in a half hour or less, and with either general anesthesia or a local anesthetic the procedure is virtually painless. The surgery is an outpatient procedure.
