A: The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that the first vision screening be conducted for a newborn prior to being discharged from the hospital. Visual function will be monitored by your child’s pediatrician during well-child exams (usually at two, four and six months of age). If there are any signs of an eye condition, your child may be referred to an ophthalmologist. Beginning at three years of age (and yearly after five years of age), amblyopia (poor vision in an otherwise normal appearing eye), refractive and alignment screenings should take place. If you notice any signs of decreased vision or misalignment of the eye, please contact your ophthalmologist for a complete eye examination.

Primary Care
A: A physician referral is not necessary in order to schedule an appointment at The Eye Clinic unless it is required by your insurance or managed care plan. It is the patient’s responsibility to obtain any required referrals from your primary care physician prior to your scheduled appointment time.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a common eye disorder referring to a group of eye diseases causing progressive damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve receives light-generated nerve impulses from the retina and transmits these to the brain, where we recognize those electrical signals as vision.

Here at our Las Cruces ophthalmology practice, it is not uncommon to receive visits from pregnant clients. It should be noted that when you’re expecting, you should expect certain changes in your vision brought about by hormonal shifts, fluid retention, and increased blood volume. Below is a quick guide to common changes in vision and your eye health when you’re pregnant.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a common, painless eye condition in which the central portion of the retina deteriorates and does not function adequately. The diagnosis of macular degeneration is becoming increasingly common due to patient awareness, physician access, groundbreaking improvements in treatment, and the relentless graying of the population. These factors exponentially increases the percentage of the population at risk for this condition.
Laser Eye Surgery
Until recently, the only way to replace the endothelium was with full thickness corneal transplant which required multiple sutures. A split thickness transplant called endothelial keratoplasty has recently become the standard of care for many corneal diseases. In this procedure, the back portion of the split donor cornea is used to replace only the diseased endothelial portion of your cornea, leaving the rest of your cornea intact. The device used to prepare the donor tissue is very similar to that used in LASIK. The formal term is D escemet’s S tripping E ndothelial K eratoplasty or DSEK.

Cataract Surgery
This procedure uses the same highly advanced technique practiced during routine cataract surgery. This accurate process involves the surgical removal of the natural lens of the eye. It is then replaced with an artificial lens implant calculated specifically for the amount of nearsightedness or farsightedness. This procedure is good for patients who want the added benefit of bifocal/multifocal vision without glasses.
Eye Exam
Treatment Options The first step is finding a doctor who will take time to accurately determine the cause of the dry eye and discuss your treatment options with you. Though dry eyes cannot be cured, there are a number of steps that can be taken to treat them. The primary approaches used to manage and treat dry eyes include artificial tear drops, lubricant ointments and mechanisms for partial or total blockage of the drainage of the tears called punctual occlusion, increasing tear production, and treating the inflammation of the eyelids or eye surface that contributes to the dry eyes. Board Eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Michael Margolis received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in Electrical Engineering. He then went to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston for his M.D. Dr. Margolis completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Stony Brook Medical Center and did his ophthalmology residency in Nassau University Medical Center where he also served as a chief.

Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of diabetes. All can cause severe vision loss or even blindness. If you have diabetic retinopathy, at first you may notice no changes to your vision. But over time, diabetic retinopathy can get worse and cause vision loss.

Botox
The botulinum toxin contained in Botox can spread to other body areas beyond where it was injected. This has caused serious life-threatening side effects in some people receiving botulism toxin injections, even for cosmetic purposes.
Eyelid Surgery
After eyelid surgery, patients with once heavy, droopy lids notice a brighter more refreshed appearance to their eyes.
Blepharoplasty
An upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery restores a natural upper eyelid crease while excising the excessive skin, muscle, and fat that has developed over time. The procedure takes approximately one hour and patients should expect to have bruising and swelling for up to a week after the eyelid surgery. This surgery can be performed in the office or as an ambulatory procedure in an outpatient surgical facility. After the procedure, your doctor ensures that ice packs are placed over the eyes to aid in the healing process. Sutures dissolve in three to five days and patients are seen in the office approximately six days after eyelid surgery for their first post-operative appointment. We also prescribes eye drops and eye ointments to aid with any dryness of the eye that may develop in the first two to four days post-operatively until the skin and eyelids re-establish their normal tone.

Majority of the population are already familiar with the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) exposure to their skin, increasing their chances of developing skin cancer. However, here at our Las Cruces eye care practice, we also make it a point to educate clients on the harmful effects of UV radiation, whether natural or artificial, to one’s eyes.
