Rheumatoid arthritis, aka “inflammatory arthritis,” is fairly common, although it is not an easily understood form of arthritis. Those suffering from arthritis typically report soreness around joints, which is worse after prolonged sitting, standing, or inactivity. Pain can get worse when you move, like when you bend your knees. You may notice popping or clicking sounds in the affected joint(s) with movement, and the joint may be sensitive or painful to the touch. Arthritis can also cause pain when you exercise or work, and the pain may go away after you stop doing that activity.
Fibromyalgia
If you are suffering from chronic pain that is accompanied by fatigue, changes in mood, or irregular sleep patterns, you may be dealing with a more serious physiological condition, known as fibromyalgia.
Plantar Fasciitis
Medical Weight Loss
Stroke Rehabilitation
Stroke is a leading cause of disability in adults. Choice Therapy can help relieve the effects of a stroke by working to improve balance, walking, and the use of assistive devices. Common therapies for post-stroke rehabilitation include constraint-induced movement therapy, functional electrical stimulation, motor image, partial body weight support, and neuro therapy techniques, such as biofeedback.

Urinary Incontinence
A physical or occupational therapist can help determine the root of your problem with urinary incontinence, rather than simply treating the symptoms. Pelvic floor rehabilitation will focus on strengthening the muscles under your bladder in order to treat and eliminate incontinence issues.
The pelvic area is a complex and important part of the body that serves several functions, especially for women. Pelvic pain can occur at different points during your menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, after giving birth, after surgery, or as a result of an underlying condition, such as endometriosis. Some pelvic conditions may also result in painful intercourse or infertility issues, which can be addressed and possibly fixed through pelvic floor rehabilitation. Some of the most common pelvic conditions that our therapists treat include...

Pregnancy
Labor and Delivery
One of our dedicated northern Minnesota physical or occupational therapists will evaluate your medical history and provide a musculoskeletal examination to determine what specific type of treatment you’ll need. This may include proactive and/or preventative treatments. For example, pelvic floor rehabilitation can help prepare a woman for childbirth by ensuring an easier delivery and possibly preventing the need for a C-section.
Physical, occupational and speech therapists specializing in neurology work with patients who have a wide range of neurological disorders, including, but not limited to...
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed, typically due to repetitive motions. Common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include typing and assembly line work. According to Harvard Health, it is necessary to seek treatment for this condition as soon as possible, in order to avoid long-term nerve damage. A therapy program may include light exercises to strengthen the muscles in your hand and wrist, as well as stretches to improve flexibility.
Multiple Sclerosis
Common symptoms of multiple sclerosis include pain, fatigue, and weakness. Fortunately, therapy can help manage and decrease these symptoms. Our physical, occupational, or speech therapist will provide you with targeted stretches to ease muscle spasms and targeted exercises to increase strength and range of motion.
Therapy is generally comprised of three important phases: pain relief, strengthening, and functional integration. Some people are apprehensive about therapy because they believe it will hurt them; however, the opposite is usually true. Therapy is aimed at pain relief and strengthening, and our physical therapist will make sure that your treatment plan won’t bring you any pain or discomfort. This is achieved through several treatment services, such as ice and heat therapies, stretching, bracing, and ultrasound.
MRI
They will prescribe an individualized treatment plan for you based on your specific needs, in order to help get you back in the game as quickly as possible. This will be done after first performing a diagnostic exam, and your therapist may also review diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound. Treatment plans will take into account the nature of your injury, your fitness level, and your lifestyle.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Lymphedema typically occurs as a result of surgical treatment involving the lymph nodes. It is most common in surgical cancer treatments where the lymph nodes are removed or damaged. However, the cause of primary lymphedema isn’t always clear, and your physician may want to take additional imaging tests in order to look at your lymphatic system. This may include an MRI scan, CT scan, Doppler ultrasound, or lymphoscintigraphy.
At Choice Therapy, our northern Minnesota physical therapists will get to the root of your pain and provide long-lasting back pain relief. In many cases, our treatments are even able to eliminate the need for harmful painkilling drugs, such as opioids, or an invasive surgical procedure. If you are suffering from back pain or sciatica, don’t rely on medicines to help you mask the pain, request an appointment or free screening with Choice Therapy and get the relief you need.
Whiplash
Head and back injuries from a car wreck are typically the most serious. Head injuries can lead to vision problems, skull fractures and concussions. With a concussion, you may experience dizziness and headaches. Another common car accident injury is a herniated disk. Neck and chest injuries are also common, with whiplash being the most common accident injury.
Arthroscopy
In some cases, home remedies can be used to treat TMJ dysfunction. Some people respond well to over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin. Applying ice packs directly to the jaw joint can also help relieve pain. You may also find temporary relief through sedative essential oils, such as clary sage or lavender. When home remedies don’t work at providing long-term relief, medical intervention may be necessary. Stronger muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to manage pain. A jaw specialist may also use a dental splint to keep teeth properly aligned and prevent tooth grinding. Other types of medical treatment include trigger point acupuncture, joint replacement, or a TMJ arthroscopy.
Joint Replacement
People who are unable to get out of their home, live within 6 miles of our outpatient clinic, and are not on Home Health services are able to be seen for outpatient services in your home. This program is set up for people who, for a short period of time, are unable to get out of their house. We typically transition these people into outpatient services in our clinic as they improve physically. It is ideal for people receiving a total joint replacement surgery. Please contact our clinic for more information.

Choice Therapy helps patients with many different conditions. Please see the diagram below for information on common conditions we treat and how physical therapy can help you.
Occupational Therapy
Do you have a chronic condition that’s limiting your ability to live life comfortably? If so, physical and occupational therapy is the answer for you. At Choice Therapy, our advanced methods of treatment can help you find relief as quickly as possible.
Frozen Shoulder
Also known as “adhesive capsulitis,” frozen shoulder can occur if your arm has been in a cast or sling for a while, or if you have been bedridden for an extended period of time. Furthermore, there are some ethnicities that are more predisposed, and women tend to have more instances than men. It is more common in women in the 40-60 years of age. Frozen shoulder results in a painful loss of motion in the shoulder with a tightening of the shoulder joint that severely limits motion.
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow refers to pain on the lateral or outside aspect of the elbow, whereas golfer’s elbow refers to pain on the medial or inside aspect of the elbow. Both of these injuries are a result of repetitive use injuries and can be attributed to a variety of different tasks, not just the sports they are named after. Physical and occupational therapy are the best treatments for either of these conditions, because it restores the underlying joint and soft tissue limitations, that are causing strain to the tendons, and reduces the inflammation quite rapidly.
Shoulder Pain
Ankle Sprain
Acute pain can be defined as pain that goes away on its own in a few hours, days, or weeks. The example of a minor ankle sprain would be considered acute pain, as the pain will subside shortly within a few days.
Neck Pain
Back Pain
Manual Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on form of manual therapy that focuses on evaluating and enhancing the craniosacral system of the body. The craniosacral system is made up of membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects your brain and spinal cord. With Cranial Sacral Therapy, a physical therapist uses gentle pressure to release pain and tensions deep in the body and regulate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.
TMJ Dysfunction
The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull. If there is an injury to this joint or it becomes damaged in any way, TMJ dysfunction may develop. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMJ dysfunction, is a condition that causes pain and stiffness of the jaw joint and its surrounding muscles. The temporomandibular joint is a complex and important structure comprised of bones, tendons, and muscles that may cause you to feel pain on one or both sides of the jaw. This can make it very difficult to open your mouth, talk, yawn, and chew.
Your foot contains several tendons that work together to form your arch. When the tendons pull together properly, your foot will form a proper arch. However, when the tendons do not pull together properly, your foot will form a very small arch or no arch at all. This is referred to as “fallen arch” or “flat foot” and can cause pain or discomfort with time.
Foot Pain
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the connective tissue on the bottom of your foot. This can occur from aggravated overuse, such as constant standing, improper posture, or footwear that lacks proper arch support.
