Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is another modern treatment we offer for heel pain. This treatment uses high-power sound waves to end chronic heel pain without surgery. The discovery of ESWT came about somewhat by accident. Shock wave therapy is used regularly by urologists to break up and disperse kidney stones. Urologists began reporting that patients who had kidney stones treated showed increased bone density and new tissue growth. This led to studies for using shock wave therapy for soft tissue injuries with amazing results: 75%-80% of patients with soft tissue injuries we reported to be healed or greatly improved following ESWT. ESWT works by purposely targeting trauma at the pain site. This stimulates diseased tissue and activates your body’s own healing process. Blood and oxygen rush to the site, activating a metabolic response that fosters healing by the growth of new connective tissue. This is what is damaged and torn when you have plantar fasciitis or heel spur pain. The most important aspects of EWST are that it ends pain, the procedure in not painful, there isn’t a lengthy recovery period, and there are no side effects.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is caused when the posterial tibial nerve which runs through the tarsal tunnel, a tight space in the boot the lies between bones and tough fibrous tissue, becomes compressed or squeezed. Symptoms include numbness over the bottom of the foot and/or pain, burning and tingling over the base of the foot and heel. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, which occurs in the wrist.

A clinical exam, MRI, or X-ray may be used to differentiate and diagnose this condition. However, additional masses may occur on the bottom of the foot such as: ganglion cysts, inclusion cysts, calluses, verruca (plantar warts), healed tendon ruptures, nerve tumors, as well an array of benign and malignant or cancerous soft tissue tumors. Itâ€™s best to be evaluated by a medical professional when you notice an abnormal growth on the bottom of your foot.

Wound Care
The science of wound care has advanced significantly over the past ten years. The old thought of â€œlet the air get at itâ€ is now known to be harmful to healing. We know that wounds and ulcers heal faster, with a lower risk of infection, if they are kept covered and moist. The use of full-strength betadine, peroxide, whirlpools and soaking are NOT recommended, as this could lead to further complications.

Bunion Surgery
There are a number of different ways to perform bunion surgery. The best procedure for one person is not necessarily the best for another. Some procedures allow you to walk much sooner meaning you may not have to use crutches for as long, and some require longer non weightbearing. Depending on your foot type and symptoms, a specific procedure may be warranted over another.

The surgery was developed by Dr. Lee Dellon, Professor of Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery at John Hopkins University, who discovered that nerves were subject to compression and swelling in areas that were anatomically tight, including the inside of the ankle, which caused symptoms of neuropathy.

Ingrown Toenails
The most common cause of ingrown toenails improper trimming. Cutting your nails too short encourages the skin next to the nail to fold over the nail. Another cause of ingrown toenails is wearing shoes that are tight or short.
Reconstructive Surgery
In some cases, a surgery may need to be performed to repair a torn or damaged tendon and restore normal function. In the most severe cases, reconstructive surgery may be required.

Whether you are a professional athlete or play sports just for fun, the demands made on your feet and lower limbs can lead to a range of injuries, including blisters, sprained ankles, torn ligaments, shin splints (leg pain), knee pain, low back pain and other joint or muscle problems. Added to these are common complaints such as corns, calluses and Athlete’s foot. Your running style, poor footwear and even minor limb length differences can also contribute to injury.

Patients with diabetes have an increased risk of developing foot ulcers or sores. A diabetic foot ulcer is an open sore or wound that occurs in approximately 15 % of patients with diabetes and is commonly located on the bottom of the foot. Of those who develop a foot ulcer, 6 percent will be hospitalized due to infection or other ulcer-related complication. Foot ulcers are the most common reason for hospital stays in people with diabetes and may take weeks or months to heal.
Calluses
Never try to remove calluses, corns or warts by yourself. Commercial, over-the-counter preparations that remove warts or corns should be avoided because they can burn the skin and cause irreplaceable damage to the foot of a diabetic sufferer. Never try to cut calluses with a razor blade or any other instrument because the risk of cutting yourself is too high, and such wounds can often lead to more serious ulcers and lacerations. See your podiatric physician for assistance in these cases.

Causes of hammertoe include improperly fitting shoes and muscle imbalance. Treatment for the condition typically involves wearing shoes with soft, roomy toe boxes and toe exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Commercially available straps, cushions, or nonmedicated corn pads may also relieve symptoms.

Heel spur syndrome, the condition is often successfully treated with conservative measures, such as the use of anti-inflammatory medications, ice packs, stretching exercises, orthotic devices, and physical therapy. Note: Please consult your physician before taking any medications. In persistent cases, APC Injections or Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment (ESWT) may be used to treat the heel pain.

Foot Warts
Plantar warts, also known as verrucas, appear on the soles of the feet and are one of several soft tissue conditions that can be quite painful. Unlike other foot warts, plantar warts tend to be hard and flat, with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries. They are often gray or brown (but the color may vary), with a center that appears as one or more pinpoints of black. Plantar warts are often contracted by walking barefoot on dirty surfaces or littered ground. The virus that causes plantar warts thrives in warm, moist environments, making infection a common occurrence in public pools and locker rooms.
Foot Orthotics
Use of foot orthotics following surgery: Bunion surgery does not usually alleviate all of the forces that caused the bunion in the first place. This is because the biomechanical cause of the bunion is often due to function in another part of the foot. Surgery to correct the underlying biomechanical cause would, in many situations, be too extensive and involved to be a practical treatment option. In addition, it is simply not necessary in most cases. Once the bunion is corrected, foot orthoses will likely be used to improve foot biomechanical function and help prevent return of the bunion deformity. The orthotics can fit into many shoe types, including womenâ€™s dress shoes. Note that if you already have orthotics, you will likely need new ones after surgery to match the new shape of your foot.

Podiatric Deformities
Ulcers form due to a combination of factors, such as lack of feeling in the foot, poor circulation, foot deformities, irritation (such as friction or pressure), and trauma, as well as duration of diabetes. Patients who have diabetes for many years can develop neuropathy, a reduced or complete lack of feeling in the feet due to nerve damage caused by elevated blood glucose levels over time. The nerve damage often can occur without pain and one may not even be aware of the problem. Your podiatric physician can test feet for neuropathy with a simple and painless tool called a monofilament.
