Brow Lift
The surgery, itself, is typically performed as a day surgery at Houston Methodist St. John Hospital under general anesthesia. When combined with other procedures, you may need to spend the night in the hospital. A brow lift will take approximately two hours to complete. Sutures will be placed to close the incision(s) along or within the hairline. Following the procedure, will be taken to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit to begin the recovery process. After continuing to recover in the Outpatient Surgery Unit, you will be discharged home. You will need to have a responsible individual drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours following surgery.
Eyelid Surgery
Liposuction
Liposuction, technically known as suction-assisted lipectomy, can be used to treat localized areas of adiposity (fatty collection). Fluid is first injected into the areas to receive treatment. Small incisions are made for access and typically require a single suture for closure. The fluid contains lidocaine for pain relief and epinephrine to help minimize blood loss. Next, liposuction is performed to reduce the fatty content of the areas being treated. Liposuction is used for localized fatty deposits and is not appropriate for global fat reduction. Liposuction is frequently combined with other breast or body procedures but can be performed as the sole procedure.

Breast Reduction
Breast reduction, technically known as Bilateral Reduction Mammaplasty, is usually performed for physical relief rather than simple cosmetic improvement. Most women who decide to have a breast reduction have large, sagging breasts that restrict activities and cause physical discomfort. This can lead to a variety of medical problems — from back and neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. For this reason, the surgery may be covered by your insurance plan.
Breast Lift
Back in December of 2006, I wanted my breast implants removed and a breast lift. I had consulted with a doctor on two different occasions and thought he was the one to do the job. Well, little did I know that he already had a bad history of surgeries gone badly. I started running a fever as high as 102 degrees, my nipples turned black and I could see white pus behind all the black dead tissue. I called the doctor each time, and each time he would tell me that I didn't have an infection. On one occasion he even yelled at me that I didn't have an infection. I saw him in his office and still he claimed that I did not have an infection. He was right on one part, it wasn't one infection, but three.
Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance and/or function of the nose. There may be features of your nose you dislike or you may have suffered an injury, which changed your nose. Rhinoplasty allows modification of the shape and size of the nose. A deviated septum can make breathing through the nose difficult or impossible. In many cases, insurance will pay for correction of the deviation, known as septoplasty. Dr. Barlow strives to provide a natural-looking result while effectively improving your function and appearance.

Face Lift
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the face and neck. Time, environmental factors and genetics all affect the way our faces age. Common changes include wrinkling and sagging of the skin, jowling, and soft tissue atrophy. Rhytidectomy usually combines removal of excess skin with lifting of the deeper tissues. Frequently, the neck is tightened during the same procedure. Dr. Barlow strives to provide a natural-looking result while effectively improving your facial appearance.
Blepharoplasty
A blepharoplasty, or eye lift, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper and/or lower eye lids. Time, environmental factors and genetics all affect the way our eyes age. Common changes include poor skin tone, excess skin and fat herniation or prominence. If upper lid skin excess obscures upward vision, your insurance may cover removal of the excess skin. Dr. Barlow may refer you for a formal, computerized visual field test with an ophthalmologist or optometrist. If your lower lids have become lax, a canthopexy (suture tightening of the lower lid) or canthoplasty (shortening of the lower lid) will be required for lower lid procedures. In all cases, Dr. Barlow strives to provide a natural-looking result while ensuring your safety.
Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin from the abdomen and to tighten the abdominal wall. Incision lines are placed low to be hidden behind a bathing suit; a circular scar is made around the umbilicus since it must be transposed to a new location when the excess skin is removed. Laxity of the abdominal fascia overlying the rectus muscles (these muscles form the "six pack") is common, especially following pregnancy. Sutures are used to tighten the fascia. The sutures act as an internal corset to significantly improve abdominal wall tone.

More extensive than a tummy tuck, a body lift improves the contour of the middle and lower torso and extremities by removing excess skin and fat.
Breast Surgery
Dr. Barlow's surgical time for bilateral implant exchange varies between one-half and a few hours, depending on the work that needs to be done. Dr. Barlow performs all breast procedures in two hospitals in the Clear Lake/Houston area (Houston Methodist St. John Hospital where he is Chief of Surgery and co-director of the Plastic Surgery Program or Clear Lake Regional Medical Center where he serves as the Plastic Surgery Section Head and is on the Surgical Executive Committee) as an outpatient procedure. This is an important distinction. In Texas, a fully trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon is granted hospital privileges to perform breast surgery. Physicians who call themselves cosmetic surgeons may not have completed a plastic surgery residency. In fact, some cosmetic surgeons have not completed a single day of any surgical residency, let alone a plastic surgery residency. These physicians generally perform procedures in their own facilities because they cannot obtain hospital credentials. There is only one certifying board for plastic surgeons that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, and that is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties governs and regulates each residency program, insuring that every graduate has met a rigorous training standard.
Otoplasty
An otoplasty, commonly referred to as ear pinning, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the ears. There may be features of your ears you dislike such as their prominence or how far they stick out from your head. In some cases, folds are underdeveloped or absent and need to be created. For other patients, the concha (bowl-shaped portion of the lower ear) is overdeveloped and must be reduced. Dr. Barlow strives to provide a natural-looking result while effectively improving your function and appearance.

Laser Resurfacing
During your personalized consultation, Dr. Barlow will discuss your facial changes with you. Together, you will formulate a surgical plan. You are encouraged to bring photographs of yourself taken when you were younger. This will facilitate Dr. Barlow's analysis of your facial aging and allow formulation of the most appropriate surgical plan. Ancillary surgical procedures such as brow and eyelid lifts may be offered. Non-surgical modalities may also be suggested. These would include fillers, laser resurfacing, etc. During your second consultation, any questions you may still have will be answered and your plan reviewed. You will also be measured for your post-operative compression garment. The next office visit will be your pre-operative appointment. This will occur approximately two weeks prior to your surgery. Your current health status will be reviewed, Dr. Barlow will complete a pre-operative physical examination and you will receive prescriptions. You will also have the risk, benefits and alternatives to your surgery explained to you. You will then register at the hospital.
Gynecomastia
Enlarged, feminine breasts on men, technically known as gynecomastia, can have many causes. Regardless of why it is present, gynecomastia can be very embarrassing for both adolescents and adults. In some cases, a hormone imbalance is the root cause. Dr. Barlow may have you work with an endocrinologist to correct such an imbalance. For others, prescription or elicit drug use or abuse can lead to breast enlargement. Anabolic steroids and marijuana use are the most common causes of breast enlargement in men.
Cosmetic Surgery
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the skin. A rotary dermabrader is used to mechanically remove the outermost layer of the skin. A raw surface is created which must be cared for in the post-operative period with topical ointment. Areas of scarring (e.g., from acne) or fine lines can be addressed with dermabrasion. Not all people are candidates for dermabrasion because of skin type or pigmentation. Dermabrasion as an option for you will be discussed during your consultation. Dermabrasion is frequently combined with other procedures in a single operative session.
Forehead Lift
A brow or forehead lift is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the forehead. Time, environmental factors and genetics all affect the way our foreheads age. Common changes include poor skin tone and descent of the brows. Not uncommonly, patients come to see Dr. Barlow believing that they need an upper eyelid lift only to learn brow descent (or ptosis) is their actual issue. In all cases, Dr. Barlow strives to provide a natural-looking result while ensuring patient safety.
