Whether to get a divorce, where the minor children should live, if any, and the associated parenting plan, how much child support should be paid, how much college contribution should be paid and how it is should be allocated, how property should be divided, who should pay certain debts, and whether maintenance should be paid.

Raymond P. Schmitz, Jr. joined TEWLG in 2017 as Of Counsel. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Northwestern University in Evanston (1989) and earned his law degree from the DePaul University College of Law in Chicago (1992). Ray has over 25 years of experience in family law, business law, civil litigation, real estate and leasing, and art, entertainment, and media law. He practices regularly in most counties throughout the Chicagoland metropolitan area and is a court-appointed arbitrator in Cook, DuPage, Lake, and McHenry counties. He has also served as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. In addition, Ray is a long-standing adjunct faculty member at Columbia College Chicago where he teaches law and business courses in the Business and Entrepreneurship Department. Ray has been a member of numerous bar associations over the years, has served as trustee and director for non-profit organizations in and around Chicago, and continues to actively volunteer and hold leadership positions in various civic, youth sports, service, and charitable organizations.

Estate Planning

The fourth estate planning tool is a Revocable Living Trust. This trust is like a land trust, but you are your own trustee, there are no annual fees, it’s more flexible, and it can hold real estate and personal property. You can name your trust as the beneficiary on investments, bank accounts and life insurance policies so that you can dictate when the beneficiary receives the money, and the purposes for which the money can be used.
Power of Attorney
Unlike the first four tools I just talked about that transfer property upon your death, the fifth tool is to be used while you are alive. This tool is called a Power of Attorney for Health Care. It allows you to designate someone to make medical decisions for you should you be unable to make them yourself. It also allows you to dictate your life sustaining treatment wishes.
