Carmen Bustamante was born in La Habana, Cuba. As a child she was driven towards the career of medicine with the passion she learned from her aunt, a primary care doctor of her town. She, later attended El Instituto Ciencias Medicas de la Habana and obtained a Doctorate in General Medicine in 1996-2002. Upon arriving in the United States in 2004, Carmen decided to follow a new path in her career â€” she enrolled and attended Florida International University Nursing program for foreign physicians and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Class of 2011). Then, she advanced her career at Barry University where she received her Masters in Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (Class of 2016). CanoHealth has been home to Carmen as she has grown from Medical Assistant to Nurse Practitioner, putting to practice experiences learned through the different fields in her career. Her loving, knowledgeable, and charismatic personality is a great addition to the CanoHealth family.
Electrocardiogram
Sandra Veloso is one of the Medical Assistants to the office which has a wide range of duties including, but not limited to performing EKG studies, phlebotomy when necessary, preparing patients prior to seeing the doctor, covering the front desk staff as needed and placing medical supply orders as well as keeping inventory. Sandra has been working with CanoHealth since she obtained her degree in 2010.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Mendizabal-Piedra was born in La Habana, Cuba. Her family wanting the best for her sent her to the United States at the young age of 15. While in Miami, FL, she graduated from Miami Springs Senior High. She then set out for Spain to attend Medical school, in an attempt to follow in her fatherâ€™s footsteps. Accompanying her on her journey would be her new husband, Osvaldo Piedra, an aspiring physician himself. Dr. Mendizabal-Piedra obtained her Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from La Universidad De Oviedo in 1984. She completed her internship at Metropolitan Hospital in New York in 1986. Dr. Mendizabal-Piedra also completed her residency and served as a Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at Metropolitan Hospital in 1989 and 1990, respectively. She opened her medical practice in 1990 and has been located in the same location since as a Hialeah based doctor.

As a way to better serve our patients we have added not only abdominal, but also cardiac ultrasound capabilities to our Hialeah clinic. This allows our staff to better treat our patients without having to send them out for testing as frequently, keeping the service professional and centralized.
Nuclear Medicine
Jennifer Pordieguez has been a member of our staff since January 2015. She is our pharmacy coordinator and in change of e-prescribing medications directly to the pharmacy, ensuring all our patients receive their treatments in a timely manner. She also assists in directing phone calls, scheduling appointments and taking messages. Jennifer is currently pursuing a career within the medical field, specializing in nuclear medicine.
