Ultrasound
Soft tissue is commonly used in reference muscle, tendon or ligament. Injuries to these structures represent another large source of chronic pain. Prolotherapy â€” injections that re-grow torn ligaments â€” and Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound â€” studies to image the presence of torn muscle, ligament or swollen tendons â€” have gained wider acceptance within the medical community. When used in combination, they represent a powerful approach to reducing pain and repairing the source of it.
MRI
Examples of structural tests include CAT Scans, MRI, and Myelography. These tests study the “hardware”. Examples of physiologic studies include Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) Studies and Thermography. These tests study the “software”. Examples of function-oriented tests include Computerized Motion Analysis (Lift Track) and Biodex. These tests measure “performance”.

Joint Replacement
In the most severe cases joint replacement surgery may be required. If you have non-osteoarthritic rheumatism then medical management directed toward stopping inflammation can become more important as well. In any instance, however, by treating extra-articular structures when they are involved there are many more options for people with pain, weakness, or functional impairment from arthritis of any kind.

Dr Terzella completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson, JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute and then a Fellowship in Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine (with a focus on interventional spine procedures, peripheral joint procedures, regenerative techniques, and pain management) in Arizona but that was not enough. After many years of private practice in a multi-specialty group he decided to join Piedmont Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PA because he wants to help alleviate pain, weakness, and numbness for his patients and didn’t want to be stuck in a box. He is dedicated to offering patient centered care in a shared decision making model that offers proven results.
Physical Therapy
Injections may be used to reduce inflammation of the joint or associated nerve, reduce muscle spasm, or even to regenerate (or proliferate) ligament. If the joint itself is badly arthritic, an injection of artificial cartilage to help lubricate the joint can also be effective. Most of these treatments are combined with exercise, anti-inflammatory medicines and physical therapy.
