Born and raised in Marin, Kristie attended Trinity College where she received her degree as a Medical Assistant. She is also certified in phlebotomy. Male Infertility
Male infertility is defined as any abnormality of sperm count, motility or shape. A semen analysis, a microscopic evaluation of an ejaculated semen specimen, is able to provide information on all of these parameters. There are many causes of sperm production abnormalities including anatomic, hormonal and environmental disruptors. Some causes of male infertility may be treated with medical or surgical interventions while others will require intrauterine inseminations
Infectious Diseases
Fertility preservation encompasses all medical interventions designed to sustain one’s reproductive capability in the face of fertility-threatening conditions. The need for fertility preservation commonly arises when cancer patients are confronted with treatments (such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery) that can potentially affect their reproductive organs. Other medical conditions threatening future fertility include certain infectious diseases and inflammatory processes.

A Bay Area native, Dr. Uzelac received a B.A. in French at the University of California, Davis. Graduating number one in his medical school class at St. Georges University, he completed a four-year Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Loma Linda University-White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Endometriosis results when implants of menstrual tissue seed and grow in areas of the pelvic or abdominal cavities. Endometriosis interferes with many steps in the reproductive process and can be responsible for such things as poor egg quality and implantation failures. Surgery attempts to remove all of the visible disease and restore pelvic anatomy to its natural state.

Judi Friedman, R.N. has been working in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility for over 20 years. Prior to a 3 1/2 year position at UCSF, she worked at several different private practices and large clinics in the San Francisco/North Bay area.

Ultrasound
Small ovarian follicles, spherical cyst-like structures that each contain an immature egg, can be directly visualized by ultrasound. The total number of these follicles, termed the antral follicle count, can be used to predict ovarian reserve and response to treatment.

However it is contrasted by the fact that therapy is concluded with the process of embryo freezing (instead of embryo transfer). Embryos can stay frozen for years, and when the patient is ready to conceive, they are thawed and transferred back to the patient. Just as with standard IVF, the process takes 4-8 weeks, which can be a major limitation for cancer patients in need of urgent chemotherapy.
