Laurence H. Miller, M.D. earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, Class of 1973, and graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Class of 1977 (ranked # 37 out of 144 for Primary Care by US News & World Report and # 2 out of 144 in Research Quality by US News & World Report). Dr. Miller completed his Pediatric Residency at Bronx Municipal Hospital in 1980 with patient care at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Immediately after, Dr.Miller joined a private practice of General Pediatrics in North Bellmore, NY with partner, Marvin Sussman, M.D. After Dr. Sussman's retirement in 2003, Dr. Miller established his own pediatric practice in East Meadow, NY that continues to serve the children of Long Island. Dr. Laurence Miller is affiliated with several of the major hospitals on Long Island including: North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish-Cohen Children's Hospital, and Winthrop University Hospital.
Ear Infections
What is colic? The term has been used for about 100 years, but it is still shrouded in mystery. All babies cry. Some babies cry more than others. In 1954, Dr. Morris Wessel described "infantile colic" in the Journal Pediatrics, as "paroxysmal fussing in infancy", in a baby "under 3 months old crying more than 3 hours a day, for 3 or more days a week". To meet the definition, it is critical that the baby have no existing discoverable medical illness. It is necessary for a doctor to evaluate a baby who is so distressed for a prolonged time to "rule-out" such conditions as: scratched cornea of the eye, ear infection, a "hair tourniquet" (in which a long hair, usually Mother's, is wrapped tightly around a finger, toe, or penis, so that it cuts deeply, painfully into the flesh), intestinal obstruction, serious infection, or severe cow's milk intolerance. (In babies with severe cow's milk intolerance, catastrophic gastro-intestinal symptoms can appear with relentless vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and even cardiovascular shock. Soy intolerance is also present to the same degree in up to 30 % of these infants. So switching such a baby to soy formula is a terrible idea; you are making a bad gamble with the infant's safety!) Once that examination has been performed, parents will need to accept that it is NORMAL for THEIR baby to cry A LOT for that part of his/her life. Easier said than done! It is painful for parents to have to listen to and watch their much-loved infant in obvious pain. In this situation, I try to comfort parents by advising them, that if they are distressed by the sound of their crying baby, that is a good thing! Through eons of evolution during which survival for human babies was very tough, the baby that cried with the right pitch/quality, in such a way as to get adults to care for them, would be a baby much more likely to survive! (If one likes the sound of his baby crying, there is something terribly wrong, and perhaps that baby should be promptly brought to the authorities for safe keeping.)
Sleep Disorders
The time out should NEVER be in a child's crib because we don't want them to feel they're being punished when they are going to sleep! That bad choice by the parent might cause a sleep disorder.

A sad case of which I am aware: About 15 years ago, a family carried their 7 year old severely ill child with Chickenpox into the LIJ Emergency Room. They had refused the Vaccine as they wanted their child to get the disease the natural way.

It was reported on July 2, that, for the first time in A DECADE, a person has died in the USA from Measles. Clellam County in Washington State, reported a woman died of Measles, complicated by pneumonia. The tragedy is that it was TOTALLY preventable, if all of the children eligible for vaccination had received it. The death is almost certainly connected to the outbreak that occurred in Disneyland in California this year, with over 100 cases traced directly.

We know that, some years ago, an unethical physician named Wakefield took money to fraudulently "prove" that the MMR vaccine caused autism. The Journal Lancet has retracted the article and apologized for the lie, and the doctor punished. But the damage from the lie continues, as it is almost impossible to put out the smoke and stop the falsehood from continuing to spread! Parents hearing rumors of a child being harmed by a vaccine, become fearful of vaccines, that their child might develop abnormally as a result of being vaccinated. Being anxious about the health of a loved one is natural. But we should use the energy we get from anxiety to EFFECTIVELY protect our baby.

In the May 5, 2016 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, new research was reported showing that 1.4% of babies "at high risk" for egg allergy DID become allergic to egg when it was introduced at 4 months of age. But this was 75%reduction compared to the 5.5% of high risk babies who became allergic to egg if they didn't eat it until their birthday. A baby was in the HIGH RISK category if they had bad eczema, or if their parent or sibling was allergic to egg.

What's very exciting but still unconfirmed are the other benefits we get from having generous supplies of "D". There is data to suggest that people with higher levels of Vitamin D suffer less cancer of the colon, breast, and prostate; along with fewer cases of autoimmune diseases like diabetes, Lupus, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis; and also have a better immune protection against infection like tuberculosis and influenza. They also suffer less from depression, aches and pains as in fibromyalgia and are also less prone to hypertension.
