Overall

This 9 cabin resort is on North Shore Senic Drive. The owners have made the cabins & many of the artistic furnishings out of the timber including the queen size beds. The 2BR, 1BA is $200/night & has everything including Internet, fireplace, & big TV. It has 2 futons & is perfect for families. Breakfast is served whatever time works for you. The other smaller cabins have queen beds in a BR or in a studio apartment. All have frontal lake view decks.

My wife and I were driving late on hwy 61 along the shore of Lake Superior, looking for a place to stay and happened upon the Inn on Gitche Gummee. We spoke with a couple out front taking an evening stroll and they highly recommended the place. Venturing to see if they had anything available, we wandered in and, speaking to a gentleman asked if they might have a room with two beds. He replied that he might just have what we were looking for and we walked up a flight of stairs to a gorgeous full home on site overlooking the Lake. We were treated not only to "two beds" but an entire home with two huge bedrooms, fireplace, full dining facilities, hot tub, full kitchen and living room with a huge TV! We were astonished at the offering and asked the price of an overnight stay. It turned out that the stay cost about the same as we had been paying for motels along the way. We were served a delicious breakfast in the morning in the lake view alcove of our "home" at no extra cost. The owners were very nice folks and we couldn't have been happier. This is a place I highly recommend!!!

If you really want to experience what is so famous about the North Shore of Lake Superior, this has it all. First, the site is removed enough from the Lake that you won't get battered in a storm, but close enough that the shimmering chi of its water bathe you in all seasons. Second, the decor is personal, north woodsy and therefore non-corporate. Complaints on this site about a black fly or two in the room indicate an abhorrence for nature that does not belong here. If you leave the door open, insects come in. Poisoning the room with Raid is criminal. There was a fly swatter on the windowsill waiting to do the job. Third, the hosts are very loving, serene people who exude the kindness and calm that people are trying to recapture in this natural grandeur. The B&B is close to Duluth (15 minute drive), in easy distance of hiking/biking, has a great gift shop, and is a 3 minute drive from the best restaurant in the state: The New Scenic Cafe. The front yard is landscaped for gardeners, barbecues, and kids' play areas. Also, the breakfast is fabulous. We had a large platter for two with crepes and maple syrup, spicy omelet over bacon strips, and fresh fruit. There is, of course, a proper coffee maker in the room.

Overall

Lovely inn on old Hwy. 61 just after the split. It's got a bit of a European feel to it. Might be a converted motel. We stayed in the Wolves' Den suite. I had no idea it had a small kitchenette in it, as that isn't in the photos. There was the cutest little stove, a microwave, refrigerator, and coffee machine. The bathroom was a renovated closet, truly a water closet in the most basic sense of the phrase. My husband is 6'2" and fit, but it was a bit tight. It did have a shower/bath squeezed into it. The room was extremely clean and it had a view of the lake from the bed. It was cool to wake up and watch the whitecaps roll in off the lake. There is the road between the inn and the lake, but we were actually closer to the lake then we've been in many of the lakeside hotels we've stayed in. The couple who own the inn obviously put a lot of love into the grounds, nothing was blooming any more but I could tell the gardens in front of the inn are beautiful in bloom. The couple were very pleasant to talk to and prefer to take reservations by phone so they can talk to their customers. Our confirmation was mailed to us before our stay. Again, very old world feeling. We could hear the family below us but it didn't keep me awake, and I'd suggest getting up a little early to make sure you get a hot shower. Also, it's got a bit of a dated feel to the rooms. We didn't mind. Because of the location's proximity to Duluth we came and went several times during the day, but still felt rather tucked away. The wood carvings around the bed were beautiful. Definitely NOT a cookie cutter place to stay. So, if you don't mind some quirks, I would definitely recommend this inn. :)
