Bucks County, Penn., founded in 1692, comprises more than 600-square-miles of land and 16-square-miles of water. The county is home to more than 600,000 people within 23 boroughs and 31 townships. It is famous nationwide for its historic sites, including the Mercer Museum, Washington Crossing Historic Park, Pennsbury Manor and Pearl S. Buck House. Three commissioners, elected every four years and represent both major political parties, govern the county. Other elected officials include clerk of courts, controller, coroner, district attorney, jury commissioners, prothonotary, recorder of deeds, register of wills, sheriff and treasurer. Apart from colleges, hospitals, school district and transportation, the other services offered by the county include community building, counseling, human relations, mental health, family centers, victim services, recreation, children and youth groups, homeless shelters and elder abuse.
