MRI
The MRI Institute first incorporated in the State of Missouri on May 12, 1999 before it was relocated to the State of Michigan, City of Detroit, in May 2001. It is a corporation exempt from Federal Income Tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Code (or the corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue law) or (b) by a corporation, contributions, to which are deductible under Section 170(c) (2)of the Code (or the corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue law). The corporation is organized and shall be operated exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes within the meaning of Sections 170(c)(2)(B), 501(c)(3), 2055(a)(2), and 2522(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended (the "Code").
Radiology
The Magnetic Resonance Institute for Biomedical Research (“MRI Institute”) was founded by Dr. E. Mark Haacke, PhD, a world renowned MR physicist who is a pioneer in angiography, fast imaging and cardiovascular imaging. He has spearheaded scientific and educational efforts in the field as the author of MRI: Physical Principals and Sequence Design; an editor of the first text in MR Angiography with Dr. James Potchen, Chairman of Radiology at MSU; and as editor of Current Protocols in MRI. He is currently the Director of the MRI Institute for Biomedical Research, the Director of the MR Research Facility at Wayne State University, a Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University, a Professor of Radiology at Loma Linda University and a Professor of Physics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Prof. Haacke was awarded the 2004 Gold Medal of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine this May in Kyoto, Japan, the most prestigious award offered in this field outside the Nobel Prize. Prof. Haacke has personally mentored more than 50 students, post-doctoral fellows, engineers, clinical fellows and research fellows.

Lesions
The development of susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) has opened the door for improved contrast and improved detection of hemorrhage in tumors. Part of the characterization of tumors lies in understanding the angiographic behavior of lesions both from the perspective of angiogenesis and micro - hemorrhages. Aggressive tumors tend to have rapidly growing vasculature and many microhemorrhages. Hence, our ability to detect these changes in the tumor could lead to a better determination of the tumor status. The enhanced sensitivity of SWI to venous blood and blood products due to their differences in susceptibility compared to normal tissue leads to better contrast in detecting tumor boundaries and tumor hemorrhage.
