Overall

The most horrible experience. I haven't decided yet if I want to press criminal charges. The assistant stabbing me in the side of my tong and the dentist didn't numb me up enough before he started pulling my teeth.

Overall

I went in for an extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth and to make appointments to have 2 other teeth crowned, filled, or extracted and bridged, whatever was the best option.

The technician couldn't get the x-rays done right; the dentist told her right in front of me they were unusable. That didn't stop the office from charging me for them, $50 total. The dentist, Keith W. Smith, DDS, looked in my mouth for about 30 seconds, poked a tooth with a sharp metal object, and that was it. Well, he also looked at the "unusable" x-rays. His words, not mine.

He wrote me a prescription for amoxicillin., which was fine. I understand that certain things can't be done while an infection is present. I tried to ask him questions, like whether I should be looking for a crown, a filling, or a bridge for my molars. His response? "I don't know." I asked him a few times in various ways about what he, as a dentist, thought my best option going forward should be - how to salvage, restore, and/or replace my left side molars. And his response was "I don't know.".

At this point he turned and flat refused to even attempt a root canal/crown. I asked him that if the antibiotics are to deal with the infection, and a root canal is to remove an infected nerve, shouldn't it be a one or the other deal? My question was completely ignored. So, I still have no idea if I have to have a root canal if the antibiotics deal with the infection. Instead, he made a couple VERY condescending and insulting remarks about the condition of my teeth (as if the pain I'm in and the visible broken tooth doesn't tell me anything). I'm there to get this crap FIXED, not to feel worse about it than I already do.

Even though his practice advertises crowns, this dentist refused to even consider doing it himself and referred me to an endodontist for the crowns. This endodontist happens to be one of the most expensive dentists in Hot Springs.

So at this point, I ask him if, since he won't attempt to fix anything but the infection, if there is anything he can do about the pain, especially since the ibuprofen is starting to seriously upset my stomach after a steady diet of it for 2 weeks. His response was, and I quote "I do not prescribe anything for the pain until the patient has received treatment". At this point I'm thinking... "You refused to treat me other than some antibiotics. Why am I here again?". Then he leaves after giving some paperwork for the poor assistant to try and explain to me. This guy spent a grand total of MAYBE 4 minutes with me, including looking inside my mouth and not answering any questions.

Total bill was $90. I am still in just as much pain, and still know nothing about the exact condition of my teeth or what i need to do going forward. The x-rays I were forced to pay for are unusable, and I paid a guy $40 to sit with me for 4 minutes, insult me a couple times, and leave without really helping me with anything.

At least I do have an explanation for his strange statement when asked about pain relief. He was sanctioned for prescription painkiller abuse and diverting them from his practice for his personal use in 2011. http://www.healthgrades.com/media/english/pdf/sanctions/HGPY1AE69D0789F14251A03242011.pdf for the board judgment. I imagine he is not allowed to prescribe them or very closely scrutinized when he does.

So to anyone out there, stay away from Summit Dental Group in Hot Springs, or if you go there, stay away from Keith W. Smith DDS. Unless you like paying a guy $10 a minute to insult you and do nothing.
