Founded in 1978, Services for the Underserved is a social welfare organization that provides residential and support services to individuals with special needs. It provides residences, care centers and health care services for the elderly, disabled, persons with a mental illness and developmental disabilities, families with HIV and AIDS, and homeless and needy individuals. It provides residential, rehabilitative and clinical services that include medical, nursing, psychological, speech therapy, social work, nutritional, recreational and case management services. The organization also offers emergency shelter programs for the gay community and at-risk drug users. It additionally offers crisis intervention, harm reduction materials, risk management training, medical case management and housing placement assistance to individuals residing in commercial single-room occupancy hotels. It also offers home health aides and personal care services for the elderly in its various centers. Located in Brooklyn, N.Y., the organization also offers assistance with training and education for job placement.
