Brush your removable appliance every day as a part of your regular brushing and flossing schedule. Because food particles and plaque can accumulate on your appliance just as they do on your teeth, soak the appliance daily. Dissolve a denture-cleaning tablet in a glass of tap water at room temperature, and soak your appliance once a day.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
The second reason for an early exam is that many conditions are far easier to treat if they're caught at an early stage, when children's natural growth processes are in full swing. For example, a palatal expander appliance can effectively treat a child's crossbite (a condition where the upper teeth close inside the lower ones) because a youngster's jaw is still growing rapidly. However, if left untreated, oral surgery could later be required to correct this serious condition.
Jaw Surgery
Corrective jaw surgery, also called orthognathic (or-thog-NATH-ik) surgery, straightens and realigns irregularities of the jawbones. This can improve the way the jawbones work and can enhance your overall facial profile. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. Jaw surgery may be a corrective option if you have jaw problems that can't be resolved with other orthodontic treatments and can give you a lifetime of healthy jaw function and beautiful smiles. Jaw surgery is not usually recommended until after your jaws stop growing, usually around ages 14 to 16 years for females and ages 17 to 21 years for males. Dr. Damon uses the latest digital imaging technology to minimize treatment and recovery time, and maximize the effectiveness of jaw surgery for his patients. This gives our patients the chance to return to their normal routines shortly after their jaw surgery.
Tooth Extractions
. This occurs when the jaws are too small to accommodate all of the permanent teeth. Either palatal expansion or tooth extraction may be recommended at this point, to help the adult teeth erupt (emerge from below the gums) properly. Even if braces are required later, the treatment time will likely be shorter and less complicated.
