Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

MRI
The labrum is a rim of cartilage attached circumferentially around the shoulder socket or glenoid. These injuries often occur in overhead athletes such as baseball players, but can occur in many sports. Physical examination in conjunction with an MRI is used to diagnose the injury. Symptoms often include pain, loss of strength, perceived instability, and catching or locking of the shoulder. A SLAP tear can occur acutely with a specific identifiable injury, with repetitive use, or chronically secondary to degeneration of the tissue. Recommended initial treatment is most often rehabilitation and rest from activity. Arthroscopic surgery is commonly performed for failure of non-operative treatment and sometimes as initial treatment for acute injuries.

First, a CT scan of your arthritic joint is taken. A CT scan is a 3D image of the joint. This CT scan is uploaded into the Mako System software and then a 3D model of your joint is created. This 3D model is used to create a custom plan for your joint before you even enter the operating room.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Thank you for visiting Capital City Orthopaedics, the practice of Austin orthopedic surgeon, Michael Burris, MD. For those of you wondering, Dr. Omar Akhtar has now moved on to practice in Iowa. Dr. Akhtar was a great orthopedic surgeon and partner. He will be missed by his patients and by us. We now continue our mission to provide a personalized, compassionate experience from your first phone call and through every encounter with us. Our philosophy is to exhaust non-surgical treatment options whenever possible, while providing specialized surgical treatment when necessary. Capital City Orthopaedics was established by Dr. Burris in 2007 and we have been restoring mobility in Austin and trying our best to improve our patient’s lives ever since. (In case you were wondering, yes orthopedics and orthopaedics are both correct spellings.) We offer specialized and comprehensive care of problems with the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments of the entire body) including but not limited to non-surgical treatment, preventative care, arthroscopic surgery, minimally invasive surgery and joint replacement surgery.
Joint Replacement
In the operating room, we will have your personalized surgical plan ready to go. Then, specific and small adjustments are made on the computer to how the implant should be positioned in order to match the implant to your specific joint. Once satisfied with how the implant fits on the computer, the robotic arm is given the final position of the implant. Finally, the robotic arm is brought in, and under surgeon control and direction, your joint is precisely prepared so that the virtual plan on the screen is turned into a real plan. This allows for an implant that fits specifically to your hip or knee. This technique should result in an improved fit which could ultimately improve satisfaction and longevity of your joint replacement. The operation does take a little longer than a non-robotic joint replacement and extra time is spent in the planning phase of the operation.

Dr. Burris was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with honors from the McCombs School of Business while completing his premedical curriculum. This was followed by obtaining a medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston where he also completed a five year residency in orthopedic surgery.

Knee Replacement
Robotic arm-assisted knee replacement using the MAKO platform is a relatively new technology. The actual knee implant used is exactly the same whether having a traditional or robotic assisted knee replacement. Utilizing the MAKO robotic-arm assisted knee allows for a personalized, unique surgical plan and implantation that is customized to your anatomy. The hope is that this will result in improved results from surgery including how long a knee replacement can last. At this point, this should still be considered a theoretic advantage as long term results are being evaluated and compared to the very good long term results of traditional knee replacement.

“ Dr. Omar Akhtar performed reconstructive surgery to both my knees this year. Both knee joints were originally replaced (not by Dr. Akhtar) in June of 1995. The right knee joint required replacement because it had worn to point of metal on metal. Surgery on this knee was done in January 2014. Surgery to the left knee, done in May 2014, was a bit more involved. A condition known as osteolysis had deteriorated a portion of bone about the size of a golf ball on the femur just above the original prosthesis. Because of the missing bone more involved surgery and a special type of replacement joint was required. I was very impressed with the amount of time and effort Dr.Omar Akhtar spent researching and consulting to find the very best surgery procedure and the best type of replacement joint for this situation. It has been nine months since surgery to the right knee and six months since surgery to the left knee and I am happy to report that both are functioning very well and without pain or limitations. Dr. Akhtar is a very professional doctor and an outstanding and caring person. He listens intently. He explains the condition, procedure, and recovery thoroughly and is more than willing to listen and respond to any concerns. Has a great staff who are easily accessed. Dr. Akhtar is a very highly recommended doctor and physician. Thanks for a job well done.

Sports Medicine
Sports medicine includes a variety of injuries most commonly involving the knee or shoulder. This includes both traumatic injuries and repetitive use injuries. From ligament injuries in the knee such as ACL tears to tendon injuries of the shoulder's rotator cuff, Dr. Burris has expertise with treating these injuries both without surgical intervention or with surgical repair. He will explain the nature of your injury and discuss optimal treatment with a goal of returning to normal functional use or sports activities.
Physical Therapy
Rotator cuff tears can occur secondary to acute trauma or more commonly secondary to degeneration and repetitive use. An acute traumatic rotator cuff tear is likely to require surgical treatment. Chronic and degenerative tears will most often be treated with a course of non-operative treatment prior to surgical consideration. This may include physical therapy, injections, medication, and home exercises. An MRI is often obtained to further evaluate the rotator cuff.
