Austin Public Library Friends Foundation Mission The Austin Public Library Friends Foundation supports the Austin Public Library by increasing public awareness about the library and its importance to the community, and by raising funds to enhance library collections, programs, and facilities. The Austin Public Library Foundation was established in 1996 to increase private support for the Austin Public Library's collections, programs, and facilities. Since 1962 the Friends of the Austin Public Library has provided grassroots support for Austin's libraries by coordinating advocacy activities. Additionally, FAPL managed the Monster Book Sale, a used book sale that benefitted Austin Public Library In 2009 both the Austin Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Austin Public Library boards voted unanimously to merge, creating a single library support organization: the Austin Public Library Friends Foundation. Jeremy Adam Kruger finally settled permanently back in Austin in 2007 after departing for college, a stint in the U.S. Air Force, and his first job following law school in San Antonio. While in San Antonio, Adam joined the San Antonio Public Library Foundation and became passionate about the library cause. Joining the APLFF after moving back to Austin was a natural choice. Adam graduated from University of Texas, School of Law in 2003 and is a practicing lawyer. In addition to the Friends Foundation, Adam has been active in the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation, the Jewish Community Associations of Austin and San Antonio, Real Estate Councils of Austin and San Antonio, and the Real Estate Section of the Travis County Bar Association. Teresa Oppedal worked for over twenty years as a law librarian and information resources manager in San Francisco for the international law firm of Morrison & Foerster. She retired upon moving to Austin with her family in 2000. She has served on the Board since 2005, and was Board President 2008-2009. Lois Kim is an assistant director with University Extension, part of Continuing Innovative Education at The University of Texas at Austin. Her work focuses on providing the resources of the University to teachers, adult learners, and the general Austin community. Lois started her career as a high school teacher, before heading to Texas to complete her M.A. and Ph.D. in English from The University of Texas at Austin. Lou is a long time Austin resident who currently works at Dell Computer as a Director of Global Services. Prior to Dell Lou was the VP of marketing for Schlotzsky's Deli, a Brand Manager for Kraft Foods, and a High-School Math Teacher. Lou went to Graduate School at UT and received an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College. Lou and his wife Kathleen have 3 boys who they try to take to the library as often as they can, usually between sporting events. Not surprisingly, Lou is also on the Board of Northwest Little League. Susan Burton is a Shareholder with the law firm of Graves, Dougherty, Hearon & Moody. She is Board Certified in Labor and Employment Law and the head of GDH&M's Employment Law Practice Group. She advises a variety of business clients on human resource matters and also represents businesses in employment litigation matters. She also serves as an employment law arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. Ms. Burton is a native Austinite who grew up reading many books checked out from the Austin Public Libraries. She is currently a Board Member and Officer Emeritus of Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas and Chair-Elect of the Travis County Women Lawyer's Foundation. She is a Past Board President of Extend-a-Care for Kids and a graduate of Leadership Austin, Class of 2003. Jayne Barrett settled in Austin after a career that took her to several states.
