Preventive Care

Dental Care
A thorough dental cleaning can only be accomplished while the pet is under general anesthesia. The anesthesia we use is safe for all animals and your pet is constantly monitored during the dental procedure. Prior to anesthesia, blood tests are performed to help uncover any hidden illnesses.
Vaccination
Many of our clients travel with their pets, even when going abroad. Often they’ll need a health certificate to accompany their pet. You will want to make sure you know the requirements of the carrier and/or destination, and then plan ahead: make your appointment with the USDA (if required), have your pet’s vaccinations and tests performed in the appropriate time frame, and schedule your appointment appropriately.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
If you are concerned about your pet’s eyes or vision, we can help. Our veterinarians can help diagnose and treat a variety of ophthalmological issues, including but not limited to, dry eyes, cataracts, corneal infection or trauma, and glaucoma. It is important to report any changes in your pet’s eyes or vision during your routine veterinary visits.

What can I do to protect my pet? Heartworm disease is preventable! Dogs should be tested annually and before starting prevention. Provide heartworm prevention 12 months of the year. Prevention is the safest and most cost-effective option, but treatment is available for dogs (although costly and lengthy). Cats should be tested before starting prevention and re-tested as the veterinarian deems appropriate. There is NO treatment in cats, so prevention is critical and the only means of protection.
Pain Management
With your pet’s comfort and safety at the forefront, we utilize pain management protocols before, during, and after surgery until they are completely recovered. This includes monitoring vital signs, assessing your pet for pain indicators, and keeping them well-fed, warm and comfortable in their surroundings.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Itching, scratching, and hot spots are all signs of allergies and skin conditions in pets. Just like humans, pets can be sensitive to irritants that cause them distress. Our team will diagnose and offer treatment for pets with skin-related problems including parasites, allergies, rashes, infections, hair loss, and more. When left untreated, some of these conditions can become serious health concerns.
Injury Treatment
Laser therapy is often used in conjunction with physical therapy or rehab and is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that helps to reduce inflammation, decrease pain, and aid in healing. Laser therapy is good for post-surgical patients, chronic arthritis, skin conditions, muscle strains and sprains, joint or disc disease, wounds, bites, and burns.

Why should you vaccinate your pet? Vaccinations are very important for young pets when their immune systems are still developing. Vaccines protect against many viral and bacterial infections in pets. Our veterinarians provide vaccination education and discuss our vaccine schedule, which helps to keep your pet healthy.

Heartworms are a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets. Twelve-inch-long worms (looks like spaghetti) live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of infected pets, causing lung disease, heart failure, organ damage, and can be fatal if untreated.

Common orthopedic pet surgeries include bone fracture repair, cruciate ligament repair, extracapsular and TPLO techniques, leg or toe amputation, patellar luxation repair, and surgeries to treat hip dysplasia, including femoral head ostectomy (FHO).

Ophthalmic Surgery
Our veterinarians are experienced in various soft tissue pet surgeries, the most routinely performed procedures being spay/neuters and mass/tumor removals. Other examples of veterinary soft tissue surgeries include intestinal foreign body removal, laceration and wound repair, eye surgery, perineal urethrostomy, mastectomy, splenectomy, and other specialized surgeries.
Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Kersten worked in private practice in Michigan and at a shelter in San Diego before moving to her forever home in Asheville. She comes from a family of dentists (the human variety), which sparked her interest in veterinary dentistry. She spent months working first-hand with several of the top veterinary dentists in the world. She encouraged Michigan State's veterinary school to add a dentistry laboratory for third-year students, which she was asked to come back and help teach after graduation. In addition to dentistry, she also has a passion for soft-tissue surgery. She is excited to better the lives of the pets of Western North Carolina by performing surgical and dental procedures at Avery Creek Pet Hospital.

Our veterinarians take every precaution to make sure your pet comes out of any procedure, whether major or minor, on the way to a swift recovery. To ensure your pet’s safety, we provide round-the-clock care and monitoring for all surgical patients during business hours. We perform all pet surgeries under anesthesia and advocate the use of pre-anesthetic blood work to detect any underlying disease that may affect the response to anesthesia.
