When I went to medical school, I didn’t even know what kind of doctors there were. I studied pediatrics, and I enjoyed working with kids. I did internal medicine, and I enjoyed the puzzle of diagnosis and finding the right treatment. But then I did obstetrics. And I loved it.

In-office procedures are minimally invasive and often allow you to resume normal activities the next day. These procedures are performed by a provider you already know and trust. The treatments available include tests for abnormal Pap smears, permanent birth control, removal of abnormal tissue and testing for Urinary Incontinence. I grew up on my grandfather’s cattle-and-sheep ranch in Northern California, and from the time I was a young girl, I helped birth the lambs. I’d wake up every couple hours and go outside and check the pregnant sheep, because there’s actually a fairly high number of risks. More than one fetus might enter the birth canal at the same time, or a fetus might be in breach, coming out feet first. So, I had to be there to make sure the fetus was okay and would help birth all the lambs, even reach in and pull them out when they needed help. So, you could say I’ve been doing obstetrics since I was eight or nine years old. I have always loved the miracle of bringing new life into this world.

In medical school, I selected OB-GYN because it’s one of the few specialties in which a doctor gets to care for all aspects of a patient’s health, everything from routine check-ups to endocrinology and surgery. But to me, there’s nothing more fulfilling than bringing a child into this world, especially when others might say the odds are stacked against a woman. In the 30 years I’ve been a women’s doctor, I have developed an expertise in helping women who face elevated risks successfully carry their babies to term.

Ultrasound
Sometime during 18-20 weeks your doctor will order an Anatomy Scan ultrasound. This is a detailed ultrasound that allows you to see the sex of your baby. Continue visiting the doctor every four weeks through 27 weeks. The visit at the end of your second trimester will include a screen for gestational diabetes.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Advances in medical technology have done a lot of good for the patient experience, both lowering the cost and reducing recovery while also producing better outcomes. I utilize minimally invasive procedures, which require a very small incision through which I insert tiny instruments and a camera, to remedy a wide range of health issues. One of the big benefits of minimally invasive surgery is the patient is usually not required to stay overnight in a hospital.

Modern medical technology enables me to greatly reduce the impact on the patient through minimally invasive techniques. Over the past three decades, I have developed expertise in both routine care and major surgeries. When possible, I prefer to use a vaginal approach for minimally invasive surgery. I am also skilled at laparoscopic surgery, which allows for easier recovery than abdominal surgery. Correcting urinary incontinence is also something I enjoy doing, since it has such a profound effect on a woman’s quality of life.
