Parasites Treatment and Control
Flea and ticks are pests that you do not want on your pet or in your house. Taking action before these pests hop on your pet is the best way to prevent an infestation. Unfortunately, you may find that your pet has ticks on them or you have fleas breeding in your house. At West Valley Animal Hospital in Allentown, PA, we can help you prevent fleas and ticks on your pets or eradicate any that are already there. Here is everything you should know about flea and tick prevention as a pet owner.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Pocket pets make wonderful companion animals, but they require different care than cats or dogs. Rabbits should be neutered to reduce the risk of behavioral and health issues such as aggression and cancer. They also need a constant supply of timothy hay to wear down their teeth which grow continuously. Guinea pigs require Vitamin C supplements in addition to fortified diets. They are also social animals, so they need daily attention from their pet parents or another guinea pig. Ferrets can contract rabies and canine distemper; like dogs, they should receive vaccines. They can also be litter trained and they enjoy playing with non-ingestible toys. Finally, rats, mice, chinchillas, gerbils, and hamsters should be housed in solid-bottom cages using appropriate bedding and nutrition. Each of these exotic pets have other special needs and characteristics we discuss during their examinations. All exotic pets should receive exams annually, not just when they get sick. If you have recently acquired a pocket pet or your pocket pet is due for an annual exam, we encourage you to make an appointment so we can check for preventable diseases and provide advice on your pet’s care and behavior.
Pain Management
Low-cost clinics which are not full service veterinary hospitals must omit many of these precautions in order to keep their prices low. Bloodwork is typically not done, and when it is done there is usually an additional charge. IV catheters are not used which makes it more difficult to administer medications if an emergency arises. Many programs are staffed by volunteers, meaning that supervision of pets under anesthesia is often the responsibility of people with little to no formal medical training. They rely on having a high volume of surgeries to support their discount to the community and are unable to provide individual attention to each pet. Because there are typically few workers and many animals being operated on each day, each worker must supervise multiple pets, making it easy to miss the early signs of anesthetic complications. Monitoring of patients is often minimal as blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and ECG equipment is expensive to obtain and maintain. Patients are often discharged to the owners shortly following their surgery and many times pain medication is not given. If a pet has problems following the surgery, it usually must be taken to an existing vet clinic or emergency for follow-up care, which can end up being much more expensive than the initial surgery itself.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Most guinea pig health disorders can be prevented with appropriate housing, nutrition and daily vitamin C administration. However, should your pig become sick despite your best care, seek medical attention immediately. Guinea pigs are much easier to treat in the early stages of a problem. One early sign that your pig may not be quite himself is to observe his fecal pellets become smaller, drier or less numerous. A healthy pig eats well and makes numerous almost identical slightly moist “guinea pig raisins”. Other signs that something isn’t right include sneezing, coughing, nasal or eye discharge, diarrhea and decreased vocalization or activity. Check your pig’s front teeth daily while giving his vitamin C to make sure they are not overgrown or broken. Your veterinarian will use a speculum with a light to check his molars any time he is examined. Guinea pigs are also susceptible to a variety of skin diseases such as mites, lice and ringworm. These skin conditions are frequently brought home from the rescue, breeder or pet store and are best diagnosed and treated by having your new pet examined in a timely fashion before exposing family members or other pets to these diseases. Good husbandry and veterinary care will help your pet live a long, healthy life.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Ferrets’ ancestors were den animals, so the home you create should be like a den, too. Use a wire cage that’s at least 18 inches long, 18 inches deep, and 30 inches wide. Many ferrets prefer multilevel cages which feature stairs or ramps they can climb and shelves or hammocks where they can perch or sleep. Avoid aquariums because of poor ventilation. Since ferrets are accomplished escape artists, the cage should feature a secure latch and openings no larger than one inch by two inches. Wire flooring is uncomfortable to a ferret’s feet, so place linoleum tiles on the floor or line the cage bottom with soft material such as washable carpet. Not all materials will work, however: Wood flooring is difficult to disinfect, newspaper will blacken a ferret’s feet, and both cedar and pine chips hold in bad odors and may even cause respiratory problems. Place the cage away from direct sunlight, in a cool, shaded area where temperatures range between 55 and 70 degrees. Clean a ferret’s home by washing the cloth bedding with a mild detergent and hot water and disinfecting the cage with a mild soap.

Infection Treatment

Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Rabbits can suffer from a respiratory condition known as “snuffles”. This condition is caused by a bacterium called Pasturella. Most bunnies are exposed to Pasturella when they are babies. The bacterial infection can manifest itself in two ways. The first is an upper respiratory complex that can include discharge from the eyes and/or nose and sneezing. If the symptoms are left untreated the rabbit can develop pneumonia, which is often fatal. The second syndrome is the formation of abscesses, usually in the jaw or neck area. The key to keeping your rabbit from developing clinical Pasturella is to reduce your pet’s stress by keeping his environment and housing clean, using appropriate bedding, a proper diet and eliminating any parasites your rabbit may harbor. Coupling good husbandry with annual visits to your veterinarian are the keys to keeping your rabbit happy and healthy!

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
A chronic disease process characterized by joint inflammation, pain, and stiffness that very commonly affects middle-aged and senior cats. Joint inflammation in general can be secondary to joint instability, infection, trauma, immune-mediated disease, or metabolic disturbances, but in aging cats, osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease, develops as a result of progressive, irreversible join cartilage deterioration. Cats with early signs of osteoarthritis may seem more reluctant to move around, stiff or lame after prolonged rest or excessive exercise, or generally irritable when touched. On physical exam, the vet may notice joint swelling, stiffness, thickening, and even muscle atrophy depending on how long the cat has had joint pain. Radiographs, examination of joint synovial fluid, and response to anti-inflammatory medication and supplements can help support a diagnosis of arthritis in cats.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Dogs with arthritis have joint pain. Arthritis pain is due to inflammation in the joint, damage to the joint from disease and daily wear and tear on joints. Signs of arthritis may include favoring a limb (not bearing full weight on the leg); difficulty or increased effort in rising, jumping, or climbing stairs; and decreased activity or less interest in playing. On physical exam, your vet may notice joint swelling, stiffness, thickening of joint and even decreased muscle mass. Taking x-rays of affected joints can help to diagnose arthritis in dogs. Combating arthritis usually requires multiple types of treatment including joint supplements, weight loss, physical therapy, and medications to decrease pain and inflammation.
Diabetes Treatment
Thyroid Disease Treatment
The aging process in cats is gradual and varies among individuals, but most cats are considered to be “mature” at 7 years, “seniors” between 11 and 14 years, and “geriatric” at 15 years of age and older. Many cats can live into their late teens and early twenties with good home and veterinary care, however, it is important to recognize and understand the common aging changes your cat may undergo. Some physical and behavioral changes are a normal part of aging but others may be associated with early signs of disease. Three of the most frequently diagnosed diseases in senior cats are hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. Arthritis is common in older cats, but often goes unrecognized.
Heart Disease Treatment
Young ferrets are susceptible to intestinal blockages. They tend to squeeze into small spaces in a house and can eat very small household items without being detected. Their best protection from needing surgery to remove foreign items is to never allow them free roam of the house. When out of their cages, they need watchful supervision at all times. Ferrets of any age are susceptible to human influenza. They can exhibit lethargy, lose of appetite or sneeze and need treatment to prevent dehydration. Older ferrets are prone to heart disease and tumors. Common tumors include those involving the lymph nodes or lymphatic system, adrenal glands and pancreas. Many of these conditions can be managed, if not cured, so that your ferret lives a long, comfortable life as a beloved family pet.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Dogs in the early stages of kidney disease may seem normal. Pets with more advanced disease can lose weight, show appetite loss, lethargy or vomit. Kidney disease is best treated in the early stages when your pet’s examination may even be normal, therefore annual blood and urine specimens need to be checked to identify kidney disease and monitor its progression. Blood pressure measurement and management with medications becomes important if kidney disease is diagnosed. With proper monitoring and treatment, dogs with kidney disease can live longer and more comfortable lives through dietary and medical management.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Pet dental examinations, teeth scaling and polishing and tooth extractions when needed are critical in preventing periodontal disease, infections, and discomfort. If your pet has a dental injury or condition, we offer treatment to relieve pain and infection.

Veterinary Surgery
The young and the old have different needs. There are also breed-specific concerns that pet owners may be faced with requiring specific medical, dental or surgical care. End-of-life hospice care and euthanasia is yet another concern pet owners have, fortunately usually later on in your pet’s life. We accommodate all of these life stages, with comprehensive service offerings as well as referral options, if needed.
Spaying and Neutering
Guinea pigs are social animals preferring to live in small groups. It is best to keep two females or a female with a neutered male. Two male pigs can sometimes be successfully housed together if they originate from the same litter, but neutering is a better guarantee that they will not fight. Plan to provide at least four square feet of cage space per guinea pig. Purchase a solid-bottom cage—no wire floors, please, since they can irritate your pets’ feet. Plastic-bottom “tub cages” with wire tops also make great guinea pig homes. Never use a glass aquarium, due to the poor ventilation that it provides. Keep the cage indoors away from drafts at a temperature between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Guinea pigs are very susceptible to heatstroke and sudden changes in temperature or humidity. Line the bottom of the cage with aspen or hardwood shavings or some other form of safe bedding, such as grass hay, fleece or recycled paper bedding. Do not use cedar chips—the oils they contain can be dangerous to your pets. Guinea pigs love to hide when they play or rest, so be sure to supply your pet with cardboard tubes, PVC piping, clay flower pots, pet store igloos or other houses and/or empty coffee cans with smoothed edges in the enclosure for this purpose. Be sure to clean all the bedding frequently (at least twice weekly) to keep it from giving your pets sore feet from excessive soiling or moisture.

Laboratory Services
All cats, dogs and rabbits undergoing anesthesia are first screened with blood tests to make sure they have healthy internal organs for processing anesthetics and to discover conditions which might affect the surgical procedure itself.
X-Ray
Dental Radiology
The doctor will determine whether extractions are needed and perform the necessary extractions. We will not remove healthy teeth; teeth are only removed when they are diseased and endangering the health of neighboring teeth or the surrounding jaw. Depending on the tooth and the difficulty of the extraction, nerve blocks may be performed and gingival flaps and sutures may be required to aid in healing and pain management. Dental x-rays are performed at the doctor’s discretion to help determine whether a tooth needs to be extracted. After a tooth is extracted, x-rays can also help verify that the entire root has been removed.

Becky has been a member of the West Valley Veterinary team since 1998. Her passion is working with and helping all animals. She graduated from the Veterinary Technician program in 2010. She has numerous four-legged family members ranging from several cats, to a dog, a horse and a bunny. She enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach, camping, horseback riding and being with her pets. In her spare time she helps at a dog grooming shop. She also enjoys educating children about the care and responsibilities involved in pet ownership.
Senior Pet Care
Bringing your pet in for a preventative health care (wellness) visit gives you the peace of mind that he or she is in the best possible health. Regular examinations, performed at least annually, are also the best way of catching health problems, such as dental disease, in the early stages when they are most easily treated. Senior pets or pets with certain medical conditions may need more frequent examinations. We schedule 30 minute appointments to allow time for a thorough nose to tail exam for excellent patient care, individual attention and client education.
