Bridges
Yes. There are a large number of types of implants. They are selected by the implant dentist based on many factors, among which are the needs and desire of the patient, the location and condition of the implant site(s), the bite relationship between upper and lower teeth, the general condition of the teeth and gums, medical health and many other factors. But for the sake of simplicity and practicality, all the implants may be grouped into two general categories. The first is the most common and is described in Question 2. It has two parts: body and abutment. The body is placed into the bone and allowed to “osteointegrate” for generally three months. Then the abutment is attached to the body of the implant. A crown or a fixed prosthesis (e.g., fixed bridge) is placed on the implant. This crown or prosthesis is fixed and only be removed by the dentist, not the patient. In this category of implants there are literally thousands belonging to various brands, design, sizes and shapes, along with even more accessory parts. Depending on a particular situation the dentist can choose what is most appropriate for the patient.
Dental Bonding
Whitening often will mask minor imperfections, such as chips, in your front teeth. However if whitening is not sufficient to take care of the minor problem, you may ask us about shot-less, drill-less cosmetic bonding. This is also called Direct Veneering. This procedure is both painless and relatively inexpensive. This procedure calls for Dr. Chao to literally paint life-like composite material that becomes “bonded” to the enamel of your teeth. It’s like he’s painting a beautiful tooth on a canvas. The result is instant and dramatic. Patients are astounded at the transformation. You will leave with a before and after photo that you will enjoy showing and bragging to your friends and relatives. The following are examples of some of our dramatic before and after results.

Dentures
Immediate Denture Implants consist of a miniature titanium implant that acts like the root of your tooth and a retaining fixture that is incorporated into the base of your denture. The head of the implant is shaped like a ball, and the retaining fixture (housing) acts like a socket that contains a rubber O-ring. The O-ring of the housing snaps over the ball when the denture is seated and holds the denture at a predetermined level of force. When seated, the denture gently rests on the gum tissue. The implant fixtures allow for micro-mobility while withstanding natural lifting forces.

Dental Implants
Between 1939 and 1950’s other kinds of implants were developed and used with varying degrees of success. In 1952 Dr. Ingvar Branemark, an orthopedic surgeon, discovered that titanium cylinders implanted into rabbits fused to the bone. He named this phenomenon “osteointegration,” currently a well-accepted principle in dental implantology. Dr. Branemark then began research into using titanium screws as bone anchors in human beings and accumulated credible data that was not embraced by the scientific community, until 1982. That year the Toronto Conference on Osseointegration in Clinical Dentistry laid down the first parameters of implant treatment. This Conference led to the acceptance of Dr. Branemark’s concept of osteointegration into the dental profession and ushered in the new era of dental implantology.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Gum Surgery
Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed using an arthroscope, a type of miniature fiber optic camera inserted into the joint through a small incision. A new technology employing a dental fiber optic camera, called a “perioscope,” is now being used non- surgically to treat gum disease. The advantage of the “perioscopic system” is that it provides real-time visualization of bacterial deposits (plaque) underneath the gums, enhanced by intense illumination and 24-48x magnification. In contrast, the traditional method of “deep cleaning” involves removal of plaque without visualization and only by “feel.” Perioscopic technology allows the dentist to see and fully and consistently remove plaque, the main culprit in gum disease. In a vast majority of cases gum surgery can be avoided using perioscopic therapy. Where surgery is necessary, perioscopic surgery has been shown by studies to be just as effective as the traditional approach.

Anatomic problems such as lack of volume and density of bone may be an obstacle. However bone grafting procedures can resolve these problems and should be part of the preliminary evaluation.

In office whitening is highly predictable and safer than any self-administered kits. Even the most difficult, “hopeless” cases of dark, stained teeth are successfully treated at our office. We can make your teeth up to seven shades brighter in only thirty minutes or up to twelve shades brighter in one hour. There are many ways to whiten teeth. Easily available are over-the-counter products. While some are easier to use than others, home bleaching products take time. The results are not as predictable as whitening at our dental office. If the results of home bleach are not satisfactory, consider an in office whitening procedure. The following are some examples of before and after in office whitening cases.
