ohhs & Aahhs, a dive soul food restaurant located in the middle of the U-Street corridor, produces gigantic portions of authentic soul food to its starving patrons. The fried chicken breast is a standout; personally, I was hoping it would be served with a white cream gravy sauce, but instead, the owner (Aj -- very friendly man) asked me if I would like some hot sauce (tabasco sauce) with my order. The resulting mixture tasted like high end New Orleans-style fried chicken breast. For sides, I went with cabbage and macaroni and cheese. If you like bready macaroni and cheese; you will enjoy Oohhs & Aahhs rendition of the American classic. The cabbage was relatively plain; however, it was great cold. I ordered the sweet tea here, and it was excellent (just like the tea I used to drink daily in the Deep South...). The prices appear to be steep, however, you are actually getting a bargain given the portion sizes. My fried chicken breast had to be seen in order to be believed. The sides are stacked as well. Although you will pay somewhere between $12-20 for your food, you can expect it to last you for two meals. Also, on my visit, the owner hooked us up with an extra serving of macaroni and cheese. Like many true dive restaurants, the owner is very friendly and concerned for his guests. They now have a late night menu including such classics as Chicken and Waffles and Shrimp & Grits. This menu is ONLY available on Fridays. It is also important to note that they are closed on Sundays and Mondays so plan accordingly. I have not yet been to Henry's (supposedly the other great dive soul food spot in the U-Street area), but Oohhs & Aahhs will be tough to beat.

Food: Classic southern. Tasty, but could use a wee bit more salt. (personal opinion). Menu choices varied and well thought out. Service: Relaxed, unpretentious. Service staff very helpful with wine paring, polite and respectful. Parking: Valet service.

An addition to the historic Ben's Chili Bowl, Ben's Next Door offers all the great half-smoke kind of fare and more. Not only are these folks good at simple, fast food but they know how to do larger soul-food type plates very well. The shrimp and grits at Next Door are some of the best I've had in DC - there's plenty of medium-sized, well seasoned shrimp with a tomato broth, on top of a heaping pile of cheesy, herbed white grits. It tastes as good as you expect shrimp and grits to be. Their brined fried chicken is also deliciously seasoned and served with braised kale and sweet potato puree, both of which are amazing. The kale tastes like real Southern-style collard greens and the puree is sweet but a good balance with the savory chicken. I've also tried Next Door's Chocolate Coconut Pecan pie, which tastes just as rich and sweet as that sounds. It may be too much for some, but for those with not just one sweet tooth like myself, the mix of chocolate chips and coconut shavings mixed with pecan filling and drizzled with caramel on top is just the right ending.

Best Texas BBQ east of the Sabine. I've never ordered BBQ in a style like this, but it works. You are seated, given a meal card that the servers use to mark what you buy. You then go to the "market" and order your meat and sides. The meats are good. Great brisket. Sides of baked beans, green beans, sweet potatoes, and potato salad were OK.

I've been to Marvin a couple of times for the bar and have generally had a good time. The last time, however, it was so packed upstairs and outside, we were forced to hang at the bar downstairs before moving on. I'm definitely glad we spent some time down there though, because it gave me a chance to see and smell the food, which convinced me to go back for dinner. To be on the safe side, we checked with OpenTable to make a reservation before heading over, but were told we couldn't make one between 6:30 and 8:30. When we called the restaurant, they recommended just walking in, and when we arrived at a little before 7:00, we were seated right away to a relatively empty restaurant. It filled up quickly, and you could tell because they pack a lot of little tables into a not very big space. Other than it being a bit cramped, I like the atmosphere of dim lighting, dark wood, and lots of candles. We got the goat cheese croquettes with fig sauce to start and they were delightful. For my meal, I went with the mussels in the dijonaise sauce. They had 5 or 6 different sauce options for the mussels, and all sounded delicious, but our waitress recommended this one. The heaping bowl of mussels came with a huge thing of fries, and my meal definitely could have been split for two (with a salad would have been perfect). I also tried the pea and ricotta ravioli, which I really enjoyed. Overall, I thought the food was good and would definitely go back for dinner.

Great food. We were in DC for a couple of days and stopped in. Sha'nece was awesome and made the night super special. The fish was great, wife had chicken and collard greens and loved it. The ice cream and Apple pie was the icing on the cake.

Everyone has Yelped about the chicken; I decided I would focus my review on the chops. The fried pork chops are fine, but it ain't Southern til they smother it in that wonderful gravy of theirs. I would strongly suggest the smothered pork chops at this restaurant so long as you are not worried about your caloric intake (at which point you should be nowhere near this place!). Mashed potatoes here are great. Cabbage is tasty. Fried okra was solid. My friends speak highly of the breakfast options here although I have yet to try them. We both liked the mac n cheese; their version is smokier than Oohhs and Aahhs.
