The Tabard Inn is one of my favorite spots for a drink with friends. It's perfect all year round. The inside with its Persian rugs, leather sofas and chairs and fireplaces feels like a well-appointed, well-loved living room. Couches arranged to face one another make great conversation spots to catch up. I wouldn't try bringing a group of more than 6-8, since it is an older rowhouse and space is tight, but it's great for small groups. The cheese plate and a few glasses of wine are just right. The outside patio's parachute shade is one of my favorite quaint DC restaurant details, bar none. I would go there purely for the pleasure of sitting in their garden patio for a few hours. That and, of course, the doughnuts.

In my search for great wine bars, Urbana always came up, yet I hadn't gone until last night. It's underneath the Hotel Palomar in Dupont. Literally underground but there's a big sign out front so it's easy to find. I went for happy hour with $5 wine and appetizers and $8 pizzas. The bar/lounge area was really nice with the cozy couches. It's pretty spacious once you're inside so you barely feel like you're underground! The wine list looked great, however, they only offer house wine for the happy hour specials. I ordered the lamb meatballs, crab beignets and a margherita pizza. All of the food was delicious and the pizza was big enough to share with 3-4 people. I will definitely be back, hopefully for dinner next time.

Simple math: bar + bar sports = bar fun. Of course, anything is made better after a tequila-tasting event, which I was lucky enough to attend here on a recent Tuesday. H St CC has quality happy hour specials, but also boast boardwalk classics sorely lacking in the DC nightlife scene ? skeeball, knock hockey, and video shooting games. The get-the-ball-in-the-hole theme is showcased, where a nine-hole mini-golf course ($7) features a dapper and very dead Teddy Roosevelt and Godzilla?s sad stepsister clinging to the Washington Monument. Chips at the bar come with three (!) kinds of salsa, though better Mexican food can be found elsewhere. Still, its surely the best golf course on H St., so dress up in those Augusta whites and fill your pockets with quarters. If you can, catch the free twice-hourly shuttle from the Chinatown metro, which makes access way easier.
13.Morton's The Steakhouse

Having grown up a red meat loving California boy and going to college in Central Texas where my love for all things steak was only magnified it should come as no surprise that I am a Morton's fan. But most of us know the level that Morton's is at and also know the prices Morton's can ask for a night in its hallowed halls. But what many do no know is that some Morton's have a magical offering called ""Power Hour"" in which a dozen of the restaurant's top martinis, beers and wines are on sale for $6, as well as, some of the restaurant's top selling appetizers. Not to mention a pretty sweet deal of $15 for their famed burger and fries ( a tasty lunch staple for any in the power lunch meeting business world). All in all just because we are in the midst of a recession doesn't mean we can find ways to sneak some luxury back in to our lives... even if in different forms than before. So skip the typical happy hour next week and join the leagues in DC who are are stuck in suits all day and swing by Morton's for a martini and some apps and break the dive bar cycle for a bit.

17.Capitol Skyline Hotel
10 I St SW
HotelsLodgingMotelsBanquet Halls & Reception Facilities
My wife and I stayed at the Skyline for 5 days. This hotel was clean, the atmosphere was friendly and the service from the staff was (mostly) good. The rooms themselves were rather plain and outdated, but it was no big deal. However, everything this hotel did in terms of service ended up leaving a bad taste in our mouth. The location is odd, because it?s south of the freeway and there is no easy way to walk to the National Mall area. Fortunately, they have a free shuttle bus for guests which take you around the Mall. Unfortunately, the shuttle?s times of departure are from 7am through 9:30am (before any of the museums on the mall are open) and again from 7:30pm to 9pm (after all of the museums have closed). During the summers, the hotel has DJ parties in the outdoor pool area. Not only does the pool become inaccessible to hotel guests (they charge you about $10 to get into the ?party? during these times) you better hope that you are not in a room which faces the pool, otherwise you will have to endure 3 hours of loud techno music that rattles your windows every Thursday and Friday. We requested to move rooms because of this and the hotel was very kind in letting us do so. You can request that the front desk call a taxi to come pick you up. Unfortunately, it?s a gamble. You will either get a taxi, or a black sedan service which costs twice as much. We ended up getting one of these sedans, which said ?Skyline Hotel Sedan Service? in the window. It cost us $30 to get to the airport in that, whereas a taxi costs about $15. We felt a little ripped off, since the front desk specifically told us that we didn?t need to call a cab, we could just take the sedan. You really don?t get a choice of a taxi unless you stand out front and try to flag down one of the passing taxis, which don?t come around as often as you would think. One nice thing about the location is that it is about 4 blocks from the Metro station and it?s really close to the Nationals ballpark. The neighborhood around there is going through a sort of revitalization and the walk to and from the Metro seemed pretty safe. We never had a problem or felt uncomfortable. You can tell that the area used to be pretty bad, but all of the new condos going up, along with the ballpark, will ensure that this area will soon become pretty popular. Unfortunately, there are not many options for food or drink around the hotel. The nearest thing is a McDonalds across the street. Other than that, you are stuck eating at the hotel?s restaurant, Lapidus, which has nice food and good service, but isn?t worth eating at more than once. Overall, the hotel was okay and we got used to it. I would have rather stayed those nights at the Hyatt Regency, since it is closer to the Mall and not that much more expensive. Still, the Skyline possessed a sort of charm that you don?t often find in hotels now. It was low-key with a lounge atmosphere. Its location forced us to explore the DC area and enjoy ourselves in a way that we may not have known about had we stayed closer to the downtown area. If you stay here, try to plan ahead and be as self-sufficient as possible.

This hotel is ridiculous! The internet is not free and the walls and doors in the place had chipped and pealing paint. For the prices they charge i expected to have all the lights in the bathroom in working order, enough towels, tissues in the box on the bathroom counter and at the very least, free internet in the rooms! The elevator was scary, slow and in desperate need for an update. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to ANYONE!!!
