Animal Health Care Clinic
I love, love, love Dr. White! He is by far the best vet that my dog and cat have been to out of the 4 states we have lived in (we are military). He saved my dog's life, and he looked for the most cost effective ways to save us money doing so (unlike most veterinarians). He's considerably less expensive than most veterinary clinics in the area, plus he's greatly observant with my animals. I moved 30 minutes away, but I still make the drive for my pet's care, even though there's a vet right by my house. I also want to mention that he corrected another vet's mistake with my dog. On our cross-country move to Virginia, my dog jumped out of the car and got injured.. he yelped, limped, and was in obvious pain. We brought him to a vet in Mississippi, and that vet concluded that it was my dog's leg/paw that got injured. He gave me medicine to give for 1 week, along with a $450 vet bill. 1 week later, my dog seemed to be in more agony and lethargy, that's when I called Animal Health Care Clinic. Dr. White basically told me that (without actually saying this ) the Mississippi vet was an idiot. It wasn't my dog's leg at all, it was his neck that was injured! Even at that, he noticed the other vet didn't prescribe the right dosage in the first place (for the "not" hurt foot).. anyway, Dr. White charged less than $100 w/ Rx, and my dog was better in no time! As long as I'm in Virginia, he is remaining our vet. He is not going to charge you for this and that, for this test or that test. He is to the point and is always looking out for the best interest of our animals, and our slim pocketbook. I highly recommend Dr. White!

Birdneck Animal Hospital
I worked for Dr. Johnson at Birdneck Animal Hospital for 3 years. I worked all aspects of the job, including reception, veterinary assistant, as well as managing the clinic. I highly recommend Birdneck Animal Hospital to anyone looking for the utmost care of their pet. Dr. Johnson gives the most thorough, comprehensive exams on patients that I have ever seen. I've been to other clinics, having had pets my whole life, and no exam has come close. Dr. Johnson gives dedicated one on one time with each patient and their owner, and is always courteous and compassionate. Dr. Johnson has a small group of employees, which are exceptional. The clinic has a family atmosphere because of this, and you will be remembered and greeted with a smile each and every time you visit. Dr. Johnson runs a full service hospital. He will see your well pets for routine exams and vaccinations, as well as seeing your pets if they are not feeling their best. Surgeries, blood-work diagnostics, laser therapy, x-rays, ultrasounds...the clinic has everything you will need. If you are looking for a new veterinarian, schedule an appointment with Dr. Johnson. You will not be disappointed.

Banfield Pet Hospital
I have the wellness plan. I will not renew, though the first year with neutering and shots it did save me several hundred dollars. My issue is that the one time my dog was ill they told me he needed immediate treatment (it was in the morning on a weekday) and I had to take him somewhere else and pay for it when the office visit for minor illness is covered on my plan. Also I don't like that you must drop off your pet rather than stay with them and see the treatment given and can't comfort your pet. They give appts so let us bring our dog in and be with him for his care rather than have him in an assembly line. They are nice to the animals from what I have seen so at least that's awesome. Also their website is terrible! You can't print out a certificate showing your pet has been spayed or neutered, or a shot record even. Can't access previous payment history or check balance of current plan. You can only see your last payment and renewal date. So much info is not accessible.

Birdneck Animal Hospital
Dr. Johnson and his staff particularly Amy, Ashley, Kyle and Tara were wonderful addressing all my concerns with my rescue dog. They took the time to fit him in early for needed surgery and helped put all my fears to rest. I do agree some procedure could be done cheaper at another location, however, if you are a animal owner/lover like myself I tend to care more about my pets comfort and the quality of work than discounts. You can tell the moment that you walk in that they care intensely about your concerns and the wellbeing of the furry animal and I cannot say enough good things about them. I was also impressed with the detailed quote I received for the procedure so no cost was left hidden when I paid my bill. My little guy is now on his way to a recovery and hopefully this will be the end of addressing his aliments from abuse and neglect from his previous home. Thank you!!!

Timberlake Veterinary Hospital
I have been taking my dogs to Drs Hayles and Bundy for over 26 years now. I wouldn't even think of taking them to another Vet. The doctors are the most professional and caring people I have ever known. I have learned so much from them that has helped me and I love the staff. I just lost my beloved Lacey and Dr. Bundy worked so hard to do everything she could to save her as she knew how much I loved her. Dr. Hayles has done the same in the past for my other pups. You cannot put a price on a little furry friend's life and I go first class with my animal's lives. I am by no means rich but I do the best I can. I love all the vet techs there as well. and they bend over backwards to help me always. You won't be sorry for giving your pet the best treatment you can....look what they give you in return,.

Abbey Animal Hospital
About a month ago, my very energetic four year old dog stopped eating and became extremely ill. He could not stop vomiting and barely had the strength to get down our stairs. I brought him to Abbey Animal Hospital, terrified that I was going to lose him. Dr. Chris and staff discovered that he had a foreign body and performed surgery immediately. In a week he was back to his old self and you would never guess that he was even sick! I am forever indebted to Abbey and Dr. Chris for saving my best friend's life and giving me my running buddy back :)

Animal Health Care Clinic
My miniature schnauzer, Bear has been a patient there since I became his owner. I have been very happy with the care and consideration they have shown Bear. I'm Bear's third owner and have noticed he is timid around men. But he seems to be as comfortable as he can be knowing he's at the vet. They aren't all about getting them done and gone. I have had dogs in the past and have never found a vet clinic this genuine, caring, and on top of my dog's care.

Animal Health Care Clinic
I have been taking my pets to Dr. White for many years. He and his staff are friendly and treat your pet(s) like they were one of their own.I had a dachshund that had a fatty tumor that kept getting larger. When Dr. White removed it my dog heart quit. Dr. White and his helper rushed him to another doctor that ended up saving his life. I can never thank Dr. White enough.

Salem Veterinary Hospital
Just moved to the area and Dr. Sheffield spent more time with me than any vet we've ever seen. She was very caring and thorough with her exam of my boxer and I know he will get excellent care here! There was some confusion over past vet records and the staff handled it extremely professionally and got it taken care of immediately.
Tips & Advices
Most 24-hour clinics do not allow owners to stay with their pets overnight. However, many do have specific visiting hours or will let owners see their pets at any point during the day. In addition, owners can call most clinics at any time for an update on their pet's well being.
  • Important phone numbers, especially those of the the veterinary clinic, the animal hospital or emergency clinic, and the poison control center
  • A book detailing pet first-aid steps
  • Copy of medical records
  • Nylon leash
  • Muzzle (only use if pet is not vomiting and has no difficulty breathing)
  • Absorbent gauze
  • Nonlatex disposable gloves
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Nail clippers
  • Digital thermometer
  • Sterile saline solution
  • Hydrogen peroxide (to induce vomiting only at the recommendation of a veterinarian
  • Milk of magnesia (to absorb poison only at the recommendation of a veterinarian)
Find a 24-hour animal hospital that provides emergency services within your area. Keep the facility's contact information in a place that's easy to locate, such as the refrigerator, address book, or smartphone. Most veterinary clinics operate on standard business hours and are not equipped to handle emergencies.
Veterinary clinics operate on a smaller scale than animal hospitals. The latter are more likely open 24 hours and provide emergency services. The former generally operate on typical office hours and only perform wellness exams and minor surgeries. Veterinary clinics also do not generally perform laboratory tests on site.
The specifics vary depending on the type of visit. For a wellness exam, bring:
  • Medical records
  • The type or brand of food the pet eats
  • Medication (including flea, tick, and heartworm medication).
If the animal needs medical treatment, the following may be helpful depending on the situation:
  • Fresh stool sample
  • Vomit sample
  • Video of the pet engaging in abnormal behavior
  • Substance the pet may have ingested
