Capital Veterinary Specialists
Absolutely the most professional, loving and understanding Docs and staff that I have ever seen. My 13 year old Chocolate Lab has been slowly developing Laryngeal Paralysis over the last year or so - he had a horrible attack when we were 500 miles away from home - his airway was paralyzed, he could not breathe - had to find and get treatment from three different emergency vets to get him home - as with most vets, our normal vet does not perform the tests or the surgery to correct this problem so I was sent to Capital - we were immediately taken into a private consultation room and seen by the kindest, most concerned Vet Tech that I have ever met - both docs that were going to be performing the tests and surgery then came in to talk to me, took the time to show me a video of exactly what was happening, the procedure to fix it and stayed with me until they had answered every question that I could think of. I am in awe and have a hard time finding the words to describe this practice. All I can say is that Dusty is my child, for personal reasons more so than most - I have had some pretty good doctors personally but I feel like Dusty has received equal or better treatment than I have ever received from a human doctor. They, without a doubt know what they are doing and appear to be busy because of it but they still take the time to give pet owners peace of mind, I have been called every day personally by the Doctor himself. They do not cut corners, they have the nicest staff around the clock and even a special "after hours" number that they encourage you to call for updates. I even received a text message with pictures of Dusty during his recovery. I will pick my baby up today or tomorrow, he is 13 now but still has a few good years in him - I will never be able to thank Capital enough for saving my baby's life.

Oakwood Animal Hospital & Wellness Clinic
I moved to Tallahassee two years ago and was very concerned to find an excellent vet. Luckily for me and my three Great Danes, we found Oakwood Animal Hospital. Unfortunately, my first experience with them was an emergency visit as my Dane was very ill. Dr. Wanous not only saved my dog's life (now 10) but treated him (despite having never met us before) like he was family. I got personal phone calls checking in on Alexander and keeping track of him in his recovery. Since then, I have spent *a lot* of time at Oakwood for non-emergency stuff. They treat every one of my kids as their own. The staff actually kisses my Danes on the head as they walk in and I have seen them show that kind of love with every other client's dogs. What struck me one day when I was in the back with on of my dogs was that Dr. Wanous leaned down and kissed another client's dog on the head as it was brought to the back. The clients weren't around. It was not a 'performance'. Oakwood genuinely loves their clients, and that is something that is very hard to find anywhere. Finally, I am grateful to Oakwood because Great Danes are a very complicated breed. The vets at Oakwood are VERY smart, but not arrogant. And the mistakes I have had happen or seen at other facilities because of arrogance never happened at Oakwood. If they don't know something, they find out. They research and learn. They are always up for new challenges and always rise to the occasion. I would recommend Oakwood with highest regard and without reservation.

Paws & Claws Veterinary Hospital
I have been going to Paws and Claws for years. All the Vet Doctors are great. I have a preference for Dr. Gert because he has performed two surgeries on two of my dogs and done an exceptional job. These were very complicated surgeries and very few vets could do either. When I had to put my beloved 14 year old Cockerspaniel Down March 2011 he was absolutley wonderful. My dog didn't like going inside the vet office, he allowed me to go on the side of the building (they have a large field) and lay a blanket down and have my last picnic wth my baby. I fed her all the favorite things she loves and wasn't always suppose to have. She had tuna fish and candy kisses. My son didn't want to put her down and couldn't see how badly she was suffering. Then when we were ready Dr. Gert came out to give her a shot to put her to sleep. Dr. Gert without knowing it said the most perfect thing. When Dr. Gert came outside he examined Tangee and said, "Yes it is time, she is suffering terribley". My son under stood then that she was miserable and there was nothing more we could do for her. I have been to many of the vets in Tallahassee and many of them seem to care but Dr. Gert I think is a better quality doctor, more skilled, especially in the surgery department. Also when my dogs have had to have special rehab or procedures I had to do for them at home he has taken valuable time to show me EXACTLY how to do it. I really appreicate him.

Northampton Animal Clinic
★★★★★ in the last weekMy best friend ever, DAISY LEE, was in terrible condition from numerous tumor like growths one of them dragging the ground from her belly. Another Tallahassee Veterinarian nearly killed her in a failed attempt to perform corrective surgery. After 10 days of intensive recovery and I was seriously considering having to Euthanize her as the tumor was about to rupture. She was miserable, looked bad and was about to give up on life. Dr. Eric Randell took an unsolicited interest in her tragic situation and offered their assistance. I reluctantly agreed to attempt the surgery again instead of putting my baby to sleep.HOORAH! Dr. Wallace operated for over 2 hours, removing all of Daisy Lee's growths and then sewed her up like a giant beanbag. She survived the operation and has now gotten her stitches out and is working hard everyday to grow new beautiful shiny fur. In the meantime her youth has returned. She is happy, energetic and silly. It is so nice to have my dog back. They quite literally saved her life. It is a new Spring for her after a dark, cold, terrible Winter. We want to think the entire staff and Dr. Wallace, O'reilly, and especially Eric for the love, compassion and professionalism that they displayed. They are wonderful in every possible way.

Northampton Animal Clinic
Several months ago my husband and I found a little mother dog and her two puppies that had been abandoned out in the country. They were hiding in a culvert and were scared of humans. We were finally able to catch them and get them in to Northampton to get them checked out. They needed cleaning up and shots and spaying and neutering and heart worm treatment for the mom. The doctors and staff took excellent care of them and checked on them after surgery and answered our questions and concerns like they were their own pets. Recently we had to go out of town and boarded them at Northampton for the first time. They came home healthy and happy, and we feel confident leaving them there if we need to board them again. All in all, the doctors and staff are fantastic, and I would highly recommend Northampton Animal Clinic if you are looking for excellent pet care.

Capital Veterinary Specialists
I was devastated when I found out my German Shorthaired Pointer tore her CCL in her knee. She is show champion and has huge potential in the field. She is also a beloved pet and an important part of our family. Dr. Drygas examined her and took the time to explain the 3 types of procedures that could be done to restore my girl's knee and mobility. I consulted with two other orthopedic surgeons, one in AL and one in GA. Both surgeons highly recommended Dr. Drygas to do the surgery. The care, courtesy and compassion this veterinarian team has shown to me and my dog is what I would consider above and beyond. From the pre-op visits to the post-op care, calls and follow-up, the care and concern could not be more appreciated. Thank you Dr. Drygas and staff of Capital Veterinary Specialist.

Oakwood Animal Hospital & Wellness Clinic
I've been a customer since about 1997. I have seen several Drs come and go through the years as they gained experience and moved on due to events in their lives. Throughout the years I have remained a loyal customer because of the "family" feel I continue to receive from the Drs and staff. I have had six different "kids" (aka pets) that I've taken there throughout the years. Through it all, they have continued to provide me with a caring service. Price wise, they're less than most around town but yet still maintain a high level of care. Very pleased with them and continue to be a loyal client.

PAWS Pet Boutique
I called earlier today searching for something to help my dogs itchy feet as he has been aggressively chewing his paws since my boyfriend and I adopted him last month. Unfortunately we thought it was due to anxiety. I am not sure of the name of the person I spoke to but they were the ONLY store that I called that asked anything about my dogs well being, about his behavior and symptoms. She was very knowledgeable and helpful. We were not able to make it to the store before it closed but I am still glad we called and will be back the next time I need some doggy care advice!

Wagland Boarding Kennel
Awesome place! We board our dogs there all the time and they love going back every time. For the reviewer who did not like the cash/credit policy, signs are posted all over when you drop off. Also anything on a dog's teeth is not responsibility of a boarding kennel, it's what ever your dog ate. As far as any fleas, if your dog is on flea treatment then they should not be covered with them from the kennel. We have never had any problems with fleas or ticks there. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this kennel for everyone's dogs.
Tips & Advices
Bring medical records and medications that your pet is taking. Also, you should bring your ID and a form of payment.
Yes, there are veterinary clinics that only deal with emergency cases. They generally take walk-ins and referrals from family vets.
Yes, emergency vets treat dental emergencies and dental trauma. Freshly fractured teeth are the main category of dental injury that vets consider an emergency.
To prevent health emergencies, experts recommend supervising one’s pets, and trying to make sure they don’t get into emergency situations. A majority of emergency vet visits happen because animals were struck by cars, bit by other animals, or ingested toxins. Otherwise, the best way to prevent emergencies is by having a go-to vet you can call with any questions, and being vigilant about potential symptoms (i.e. runny stool, or trouble walking) as they appear but before they become extremely serious.
Experts say that the conditions that necessitate an emergency veterinarian visit include collapse, seizures, inability to walk, partial paralysis, and any difficulty breathing (non-stop panting, constant coughing, hyperventilation, or elevated heart rate). Gum color is often an indicator that something is wrong--especially blue gums or very pale gums. Excessive vomiting or a distended abdomen should be considered an emergency situation. Signs of any trauma or excessive bleeding should send your pet straight to the vet. Lastly, for cat owners, urinary obstruction is fatal if not treated, and generally occurs in male cats.
