As a child, I remember my parents bringing me with them to buy our fish and shrimp from the old downtown Frank Mathews Seafood Market. It was a smelly place, but my mom could turn the flounder and shrimp into a meal fit for the Queen. When Frank closed his doors years later, my dad "floundered" around the county looking for a suitable replacement. That never happened until he learned cousins of Frank were opening Mathews Seafood off Hwy. 80 in West Chatham County! He became a regular customer for Mathews Seafood. In fact, I drove him to Mathews for some fresh fish a few months before his death in 2008 at age 81. I visited Mathews Seafood today, which was my first time in the store since my dad died. When I entered the store, I wasn't greeted with the old fishy smell. I immediately saw their offerings from lobsters, varied fresh fish, oysters, crab meat, and the beautiful shrimp I came to buy. They also had all the well-known spices, hot sauces, you know the fixins you need when boiling shrimp or crabs. they even had an oyster roaster that can be rented or purchased with the appropriate eating tools. The store was very clean, and the young man who assisted me asked several times if I needed ice for my shrimp. He was very polite. By the end of the day, I had prepared a boiled shrimp meal for my family, and it was still fit for a Queen--amazingly, the same Queen!!! --Jimmy Morel (June 29, 2010) (son of Ernest and Mary Morel)

We've been dining here for almost 20 years on and off and my family for many years prior. Whenever we're in town we make a point of stopping at Loves for great seafood, this trip was no exception. The place is always crowded, but we were seated quickly. I had the white shrimp, which as always was excellent. Not giant shrimp, but large enough. I had the large option, 19 or 22 shrimp. I also had the crab cake, made fresh, and it came with their great hush puppies and fries. My meal was very good! My wife had the crab cake meal and it was also excellent. On the following Sunday, we again ate at Loves with several family members and everyone had a great meal. The pricing is not bad and most families can enjoy a full meal and not leave broke! We ate our first meal around 6pm and got to see the sunset over the river. It was beautiful! If you want good seafood at good prices in a family atmosphere, Loves is the place to go!

Anyone within reasonable traveling distance will miss some of the greatest seafood tastes in the entire state of Georgia if they pass this restaurant by. With the seafood platter, I had a hard time choosing which item to eat next from the shrimp, oysters, catfish, scallops, crab ball, and hush puppies. It was SUPERB! Every item was cooked to perfection as if they had been prepared and cooked individually with their own seasonings, batter, and cooking oil. The coleslaw is the Southern recipe, which has a spicy bite, and not overdone with mayonnaise. The restaurant location and setting is first class also. This was my first visit, and I shall return as soon as possible for my next dining festival. If I lived closer, I would be eating here several times a week. A rare find, and I'm extremely thankful that the owners and management have taken the care required to maintain such quality food.

Ate here this evening (1/24/16) and was pleasantly surprised. We picked Love's off the internet having never been there. Don't let the size fool you, it looks small and there were a lot of cars parked but the place is actually really big. We had a table by the windows overlooking the lake which was pretty. The salad is pretty good with real chunks of bacon not bacon bits. I had the surf and turf with NY Strip, and Grilled Shrimp. it also comes with mashed potatoes, green beans, and two bread sticks. The NY Strip was cooked perfectly(medium rare) and was delicious. The mashed potatoes were some of the best I've ever had. My friend ordered a Ribeye steak that came with mashed potatoes, green beans and bread sticks. He said the steak was excellent. Both of us said the portions were really big, but worth it. Our server, Hattie was a doll as well. Would go back again.

I went to Love's 40 years ago when it was not much more than a little "hole in the wall" and am still going today. As a native, and one who has been to almost every restaurant in our lovely city, I think Love's has the very best seafood anywhere. The food and service is consistently great. I have sent many of my out of town business associates there and they all go back every time they come in town. My children who are now grown and living elsewhere, always like to go to Love's when they come to Savannah. We had a "going off to college" party there for my son and have also enjoyed many great family gatherings there over the years. Not many restaurants have been around as long as they have, experienced growth, and retained their great reputation. It's the greatest in my book! I love Love's.

We live in the Atlanta area but everytime we get down to Savannah or St. Simons Island we make a point of going to Love's Seafood. We went a few months ago and it was wonderful, as usual. We have taken many relatives and friends over the years and have never been disappointed. Our favorite is the White Gulf Shrimp dinner. Now, those same friends and relatives make it a must stop whenever they travel anywhere near Savannah. Our Georgia District Civitans are having it's convention in August, 2011 and we already have a group planning to drop by Love's for good seafood, good service, a beautiful sunset over the river and many smiling faces.. We just can't wait!
