Everytime I have been to Annapurna, I have returned with a feeling of extreme satisfaction. To get a good sampling of the various dishes for a reasonable price, try the thali or the mini-tiffin (you will see the details up on a whiteboard). I had the ""spinach and onion vadas"" yesterday and they were fabulous. The owner is courteous and always makes sure we are comfortable. In terms of food quality, this is no-doubt the top South Indian vegetarian restaurant in the Bay Area.
I love this place. It reminds me of the feasts my grandmother would cook up when I was a kid - huge dosas (lentil-rice crepe) with so many tasty stuffings, uthappam (rice flour pancake) stuffed with tomato, onion, or both, and great rasams and sambars (soups). Purely vegetarian and all of the specialties that a great south indian meal would include. It's not a romantic place, and you don't need reservations. The reason to come here is for the excellent food. The lunch buffet is also very good, and includes not only the buffet itself but either a masala dosa or uthappam. You can't beat the price or the quality.
My husband and I do love Indian food and we have tried many, many different styles and tastes of India. We use to go to Sneha and Saravanaa Bhavan.Since we moved to San Mateo weve researched and asked around for the best south Indian food/restaurant in this area. Upon arriving, we drove past it because it is a bit difficult to see, just be sure that you do not drive past it. Its before the fish store. We arrived around 6:00pm. There was no one there just yet, but later it had gotten very crowded, we ordered Gandhis favorite, mango lassis and we also order fresh hot steamy idls. The food was delicious and very tasty. The service was kind and fast. Very laid back and comfortable. The price was reasonable and parking was easy.
If you need a fixin' of good South Indian food, Annapoorna is the place. It's tucked away in a nondescript stretch of El Camino Real in San Mateo, and the signage is small and easy to miss, but this is a hidden gem. The food is fresh, reasonably priced, and delicious. The service is great, and the family who run the restaurant are friendly and pleasant to deal with. This is the best place for authentic South Indian vegetarian food in the North peninsula. The Masala Dosa (kind of a savory crepe stuffed with seasoned potatoes) is the best, and the Vada (a savory doughnut) is also good. The only downside is this restaurant opens at 11:30 am, which makes for a late breakfast if that's what you want.
The food at Annapoorna is great for those that have had no exposure to South Indian vegetarian food. The waitstaff helps in describing dishes and the service is fairly prompt. The ambiance leaves a bit to be desired, but it makes up for that in good prices and good food. Lunch specials are great and the curd rice is the best I've had anywhere.
