  • the place for local, contemporary art

Although SFMOMA houses modern art, I find it's exhibitions in general (with a few exceptions) stale. I usually leave in a bad mood with curses on my lips. In opposition (in viewpoint and location), you have YBCA. Not only does it house a gallery with current and local artists, but it shows films, sponsors theater and dance (see Lines Ballet), and almost anything else. YBCA gives the art world (that is still living) a voice. You may not like everything you see, but better yet it hasn't been filtered for your viewing pleasure. It's real.

  • Beautiful Space

Amidst all the criticism San Francisco has gotten in recent years for the demise of its arts community, the construction of this beautiful arts center has been a huge addition to the city's cultural landscape. Not only does the center showcase quality experimental and traditional arts, but it is also a wonderful architectural landmark, despite its proximity to the aesthetically challenged Metreon complex.
