Wag N Tails Pet Resort
I took my dog, Molly there. She is a rescue dog with special needs. She freaks out during vet visits. She shakes, she can't control her bowel movements. It is really hard to see her in this condition. She is a cocker spaniel that needs frequent grooming. I was trimming her myself, as she has extreme anxiety going to groomers. She has anti-anxiety medication, but I will not give it to her due to side effects. I saw this groomers (Wag-N-Tails) online. It had okay reviews so I decided to try. I needed her trimmed and her nails clipped. I called first. The lady that answered the phone was very nice and patient. She said they would take really good care of her and gave me an appointment. I showed up with Molly. Molly was a wreck! She was shaking horribly. It is so hard to see her like that, but I needed her nails trimmed and her hair cut. Molly was in my arms, shaking when I walked in. The lady at the counter greeted me and talked to Molly. She was so sweet. She called the groomer from the back (Sarah) and she came out. Sarah was so good with Molly. She petted her, she said what a beautiful dog she was, she reassured me everything would be fine, etc. I was very concerned that Molly would just be awful. Finally, after many reassurances from the lady at the front and Sarah, I let Molly go. Several hours later I got a call from the lady at the front counter. I immediately thought that Molly had been too hard to handle and they needed me to come her up. NO! The lady informed me that Molly had done GREAT and that she was ready to be picked up. Great?!?! I had NEVER heard those words about Molly from a groomer before. I went to pick her up. They brought her from the back and SHE LOOKED AWESOME!!! Her nails were trimmed, her hair cut was EXACTLY PERFECT!!! And the best part of all? Although that was a year ago, EVERY time I say to Molly, "Do you want to go see Sarah?" she wags her tail ready to go. She still HATES her vet, but I have found a groomer for LIFE!! Everyone there is so sweet. I was very nervous, and yet my experience was phenomenal!! And better then that, Molly had a great experience. In the end, if you are looking for a groomer who puts your dog's comfort above everything else, look no further! This place is exactly what you have been looking for!

Michelle's Pet Salon
I took my friend's dog which is a pit bull mix and his little sister's dog which is some kind of chihuahua while he was in San Antonio for graduation from BMT. Driving up to the location, I was a little hesitant to leave the dogs just because of the outside appearance. I shook it off though, and gathered the two puppies to go in. My friend's dog happily begin to trot up to the place, until we got closer and she sniffed around a bit. She promptly dug in her heels and pulled out of the collar to get away. This only intensified my hesitation, but I told myself that she just smelled the other puppies and soap and stuff and was running away from a bath like any puppy would. I had to carry her in...and after getting inside the place she began to act very nervous and clingy. I just continued to tell myself that she just didn't want a bath. The staff was very nice to us, so I felt a little better and left them to go to his graduation. After my friend's graduation I picked up the doggies...they smelled much better and even had cute little bows tied around their necks. I payed then rushed off to meet his family at a restaurant to eat and reunite my friend with his puppy after 7 1/2 weeks of basic training. She acted like she was very tired and hot on the ride over...later when I told my friend's sister she pointed out that her tongue was very dry and cracked from what I imagine would be early symptoms of dehydration. I also noticed some red blotches on the pit bull mix puppy's belly, that looked like some sort of allergic reaction. When I asked my friend's family if they had seen it there before the appointment, they said they had not. Both of the dogs went to the bathroom immediately after I let them out of the vehicle, so I don't think that they were given water or taken to the bathroom during the 4 hours they were there. I don't necessarily think the puppies were severely mishandled or mistreated, but I would not recommend this location or take any puppy there again.

Helga's Pet Grooming Plus
First of all, they need to use spellcheck if they are going to be posting anything!! Secondly, they take their time alright!!! 10 hours is a long time to leave your pets at a groomers for any reason and I'm not sure they even took them out to potty or gave them water. There was no water in the kennels that I saw!!I took my three dogs in, two for grooming, one just for a bath at 9:30 am. I didn't get them back until nearly 7:30 pm (nearly 10 hours!!). They said they tried to call at 7 pm, but nothing came up on my cell phone from them at all and I was carrying it on me. One of the dogs still smells although they did a good job grooming them, but it was much more expensive for the dog (10 lbs) who just had the bath than listed on their website, $9, and then charged me $28 for him. They said he was "difficult," and tried to bite them, which I told them he might try, but since they ended up bathing him I don't know how difficult he could have been. I even offered to come get him and they said no. They charged me $48 each for my other two dogs although they were standard grooming and no problem at all according to them, so why wasn't I only charged $38 for each of them. When I asked about the higher charge, Helga informed me they like to take their time with each animal, yet I called at 5:40 pm and was told they were just starting one dog and then the other dog would be next. They close at 6 pm. Quite frankly I feel like I was overcharged because they overbooked for the day and my dogs were last in and last out and they had to stay past closing time to groom them so they charged me the "overtime" for their employees. I won't be going back to them.

River City Companion Animal Hospital
I have gone to Dr. Kohnen for almost a decade - before he even started this practice. He has one of the top practices in San Antonio and keeps up on developments in medicine and equipment. He will say if something is not his expertise and will send you to a specialist. I do rescues at times and have a number of dogs and cats. Some have had some conditions requiring expensive tests. He discusses the pros and cons of testing if you ask. If your animal is elderly or very ill, then he is not aggressive in treatment or testing - always keeping in mind the quality of the animal's life.As noted with other reviews, he is not cheap - neither is he the most expensive. But you are getting an excellent vet with an A&M education, who has kept his education current. His practice is also not a pharmacy for people who are not clients. If you do not intend to bring your animal for annual exams, he will not sell you meds as was noted by another reviewer. I had a diabetic cat and diabetic dog and never had any difficulty getting insulin. My dog lived with diabetes for 8 years and I consider Dr. Kohnen very well versed in treating diabetic animals.I would add to all this that Dr. Kohnen and his staff are charming, friendly and helpful. His vet techs are great as is the groomer on premises.

Stone Oak Veterinary Clinic
The post below is very disheartening to me especially since I count the staff at Stone Oak as part of my family. I have taken all of my pets to Dr.Fernandez for the last 15 years and I couldn’t imagine going elsewhere. It appears to me that this family had a terrible experience based on their own lack of attention to detail. Every time I drop my pet off for boarding I read the ENTIRE BOARDING SHEET to make sure no protocols have changed since my last visit, and I make sure every detail of my dogs stay is covered. I appreciate the biannual exam that is given to my pets as it assures me my fur babies are in excellent health. All the receptionists have been nothing but helpful during my visits and every time I have any issues I get it treated in a timely and respectful manor. I understand everybody is entitled to voice their experiences and opinions, and I am voicing mine right now. If you have a bad experience based on your own negligence you have nobody to blame but yourself. I will continue to stand by Dr.Fernandez and his staff and will continue to recommend his clinic and bring my pets there for years to come. Best care in San Antonio with outstanding staff and prices!!

Northern Oaks Bird & Animal Hospital
I have been bringing my dog to Northern Oaks for about two years now. I am very pleased with the amount of care he recieves when i bring him in. All of the assistants and receptionists are so happy to see him. Whenever i have a concern or question, all three of the doctors are quick to reassure me in whatever the situation may be. Most of the time it turns out to just be me being a paranoid pet owner, which brings me a lot of relief! This staff makes the health and well being of their patients priority and will always find time to meet their needs, whether its a nail trim or an emergency! They have a life-long client with me, thanks to their compassion and knowledge. The clinic was recently remodeled and looks top notch! Not to mention it is the only animal hospital i have been to that doesnt smell like animals! Whenever i am there, all staff is working diligently to ensure that there are no accidents or messes left of any kind. These are just a few of the many things that set this place apart from all of the rest. I definitely recommend Northern Oaks to any person who truly cares about their pets and wants the best care for them. Go by and see for yourself!!!

Becker Animal Hospital & Pet Resort
I went to the Becker Animal Hospital for the first time after 5pm with my 10 year old large dog who had a swollen red eye that was forming a ball under it. They started to get a rush of people as I was checking my dog in. They put us into a waiting room right away and we waited for about 30 minutes til the doctors came in. My dog was very comfortable with them the minute the doctors walked in. Both Dr. Youssef and Dr. Killi were extremely understanding and fully examined my dog's eye. Both of the doctors took such great care of my dog as if it was their own dog. They provided an estimate of the costs up front and fully explained all the tests they would conduct and how long it could take. They did a thorough eye exam with medicine which was roughly $150 and also gave him his annual shots for about $60. My dog has recovered dramatically in 1 day since it was related to allergies. My dog is extremely happy and himself again. Their prices are excessively affordable and the place is very nice and clean. I have to take my dog in for a follow up exam soon and I know my dog and I look forward to the next visit and future visits.

Your Dogs Grooming Shop
I adopted my malti-poo, Rio, five years ago and for the past five years I've had him in just about every grooming shop in my area, including Petco and Petsmart and I've never been completely satisfied. That has changed. Last month I was searching for another shop and found 'Your Dog's Grooming Shop'. I decided to take a chance and figured he could do no worse that what I've received in the past. I've now found the perfect shop. I was dumbfounded when I picked my dog up the first time. He was done exactly the way I wanted and no one else had been able to achieve the look. Today marks the six week point and I just picked Rio up from his appointment. Perfection again! My little dog weighs 10 lbs, and has fur that is a cross between maltese and poodle so obviously I have no experience in other dog breeds. However, I would definitely recommend this shop to any pet owner. JR has been grooming for 30 years and it shows in the appearance of my little dog. His prices are reasonable also. I think the shop has moved as the address is now 6622 Seidel Road, SATX 78209

Rob Cary Pet Resort
I would trust Rob Cary with my two dogs on absolutely any occasion. For over two years, I've been taking my dogs to this facility for their grooming appointments, and I have also used Rob Cary's boarding services. After grooming, my dogs come back clean and smelling wonderful. When we board them, they are obviously well taken care of and return to us as happy as ever. In fact, one of my babies even ran back to the tech that brought her out to me because she enjoyed her time so much.Every staff member I have had the pleasure of meeting and talking with has been courteous, kind, and above all respects and loves my dogs as their own. I would not hesitate entrusting the two furry loves of my life to Rob Cary for any of their grooming or boarding needs. I have had nothing but good experiences! If I did, I am confident the team at Rob Cary would do everything they could to make the situation right.Thank you for taking such good care of my furbabies!
Tips & Advices
Pets that do not get along with other animals may incur an additional fee. Some facilities have special solitary sleeping and play animals for these types of pets.
A checklist for what to bring to a pet kennel includes:
  • Vaccination records
  • A favorite toy or blanket
  • Food and feeding instructions (if the pet has dietary restrictions or is a picky eater)
  • Medication (if necessary, in its original bottle and with written instructions)
Some pet kennels have veterinarians as part of their daily staff, while others only have vets part time or on call.
Most kennels can provide basic care such as administering medications, but owners of pets with serious medical issues should choose a facility with a veterinarian on call.
Bordetella, commonly known as kennel cough, is highly contagious, and most dogs catch it at least once in their lifetimes. As such, all dogs should be vaccinated at least 7 days before boarding.
