Mr. Rooter Plumbing
I am a retired senior citizen lady. The Mr Rooter person who came to my house did not give me his name. He was condescending & rude. He charged $185 but only cleared half of my 60' line. He showed me a few tree roots but refused to cut through them, even though they were not bad. He said he would have to charge $3,000. even though he would have used his same cutting machine. When I said $3,000 was excessive, he told me the water was flowing down "good enough." and he left in a hurry. In addition to $185 for 7 minutes of dishonesty & sloppy work, he charged me $60 for a little container of root killer. Two days later I saw the EXACT same product for only $18 at Walmart. I will never call Mr Rooter again.

Edgewood Plumbing
Professional is not a word that comes to mind when I think of Dan at Edgewood Plumbing. A couple of months ago, he came out to our house, in Redding, to repair a leak under our kitchen sink. About an hour after he completed the call, my wife noticed that the sink was leaking again and called Dan again. During his return visit, my wife asked Dan if he would be willing to travel to our vacation cabin, in northern Shasta County, to fix a leaky faucet in the bathtub. The cabin is in a rather remote area, so I was very happy to hear that he would be willing to make the trip, and I certainly didn't mind paying for his travel time . I sent Dan a picture, and a diagram, of the leaky faucet. As agreed, I contracted Dan just before we left for a 10 day trip, to confirm that he was coming. He was, and I gave him directions and my cell phone #, so that he could text me. On the 7th day of our trip, I still hadn't heard anything from Dan, so I texted him. He said he planned to come that day, and would text me when he left Redding. He never showed, nor did he call or text me. I waited the next day for him to contact me. Nothing. Finally, on the day before we were scheduled to leave, I texted him and asked if he planned on coming. To this, Dan responded that he was "busy" and just wasn't going to be able to make it.It goes without saying that trying to get a plumber on short notice, particularly in outlying areas, is a nightmare. Dan knew this and, despite making a commitment to do work for me for which I was willing to pay his full rate, plus travel, he opted to first string me along, and then leave me high and dry (actually, not so dry). With 3 rentals and a home, in Redding, it is very likely that I would have used Edgewood Plumbing numerous times in future years, even if they didn't always do the job right the first time. But, if I can't trust somebody to keep their word, I won't do business with them. Because, to me, integrity means something. I wish it did to Dan.

Kirk Young Plumbing
I love the team at Kirk Young Plumbing. I changed out a pipe the day I gave birth to my 3rd child and vowed then and there to never do it again. Maybe it was the labor pains speaking, but none the less. I've had Dillion out to my property many a time and have been nothing but impressed with his quality of work, the timeliness, cleanliness, and knowledge.

Gardner Plumbing
Failed to fix leaks under the house coming from hall bathroom. Failure to communicate to me that they were not fixed. Also rude.I contacted Gardner Plumbing (I spoke to Patti) regarding some plumbing issues I needed fixed at my house in Lakehead, CA.They were safety straps on the water heater, leaky valves in the hall bathroom and a leak under the house where the hall bathroom was.A "technician" was sent out the next morning. He fixed the water heater strapping issue (which turned out to be a lengthy problem - water had to be drained from it and it had to be moved out). I did not complain about the water heater issue. I was billed many hours for that - and I told Gardner that I understand. The technician fixed the leaky valves in the hall and did a good job. However the technician did not fix the leaks under the house at the hall bathroom. He also did not tell me they were not fixed. I had a house inspector (the house is in escrow to be sold - I had communicated that to Patti) come in two days later and the house was cited for 2 leaks under the house at the hall bathroom. And the plumber never told me that he hadn't fixed them. No call and no communication.I had a lot of trouble getting the bill from this man. (it took 6 days to get it).My real estate agent wanted me to talk to him so I did. The man was defensive and he was a bit belligerent. He wanted to talk about the water heater and how difficult it was - I told him I understood (the bill had come to $600) I wanted to know why he'd had not fixed the hall bathroom leaks? He said because it wasn't on his manifest. But in reality on my bill he said he fixed a master bathroom shower head which no one asked him too - and could not have been on a manifest. Ultimately this plumber had fixed things I had not asked him to do and failed to fix the things I asked for.During the call to discuss this - the plumber acted like he would in no way attempt to understand or remedy this problem. I told him I would pay his bill but would report him to the the Better Business Bureau and Angie's list. He hung up on me.He called my real estate agent and told her I as screaming at him and had threatened to sue him. Neither of these were true.
Tips & Advices
  • Are you licensed and registered?
  • Are you insured and bonded?
  • How many years have you been in business?
  • What, if any, professional associations do you belong to?
  • May I have a list of references?
  • Do you offer a written warranty for your work?
  • Will I need a permit for this work?
It is important to have a written warranty for any work or repairs done to the plumbing in your house, especially if it is a major repair. Look for a professional  who is willing to  stand by his or her work.
Before you hire a plumber, contact their past customers if you're able to. These people can be a wealth of information if you ask them the right questions. Pose the following queries to these former patrons when you get the chance:
  • Were you pleased with the work done?
  • Was the project completed on time?
  • Did the plumber give you a written warranty and guarantee his or her work?
  • Were there any unexpected costs that arose?
  • Would you hire this plumber again? If not, why?
A permit provides added assurance that the work is done correctly. Having this in place means an inspector will check the work your contractor or plumber does to ensure he or she did the job correctly. If you plan on putting your house or commercial building on the market, a real estate agent and prospective buyers will want to check any large work you did to make sure it was done properly.
A trustworthy plumber will have both commercial liability insurance as well as be bonded. The insurance and the bond protects the plumber from paying for any damages made to your house out of pocket. Having professionals that carry both of these policies can protect all of you from any mishaps that could occur while they work on your building.
