Barney's Pro Kleen Carpet Cleaning Portland
The company showed up as scheduled and only took just over an hour to perform the cleaning. The crew was professional and curtious. The process they used did not involve any extraction, but instead used the application of cleaning solution in combination with use of a rotating brush to supposedly remove the loosened dirt. In talking to the crew, they said this process relied on very little water and so the carpet should be dry in no more than a couple hours. There were two problems that resulted from the use of their process. First, I don't think the process itself gets the carpet that clean. In looking at the carpet where there is a coat closet in the hall, there was a noticeable difference in the color of the carpet in the hall where it was cleaned and in the closet where it wasn't cleaned. The carpet in the closet was noticeably lighter. I think what this process does is spread some of the dirt around rather than removing it all, so while the carpet is uniform in appearance, it is not completely clean. Like a lot of homes in Portland, our carpet is a light brown in color, sort of tanish, so that fact that it was a slightly darker was not really noticeable. In addition, we were looking at replacing the carpet in the family room within a year with wood flooring, so we were not necessarily looking for the best cleaning, just something to get us by, and the price was very reasonable. However, I don't think this process does as good a job as some sort of extraction process where the cleaning solution that contains the microscopic dirt particles is physically removed. The more serious problem is that it took more than 24 hours for some areas of the carpet to dry rather than an hour or two.Ive had Portland carpet cleaners come before and this did not happen. After a few days I noticed two areas of carpet, one in the family room, and one in the master bedroom, where the carpet was raised off the sub-floor, creating a sort of hump. A few months later, I had a carpet stretcher come to the house to take care of a carpet issue in a different area of the house. While there, I showed him the two carpet areas with the humps and he said this was due to the carpet having been being over-wet. He said it was not unusual for inexperienced Portland carpet cleaners to apply more liquid than necessary and that this is a common result when that happens. Since we were going to be replacing the carpet in the family room with wood, I didn't do anything with that, but did have him fix the carpet in the master bedroom. Since he was already at the house for other work, the added cost for this fix was not that bad. A contributing factor to the carpet hump might have been that the initial carpet installation probably was not stretched enough. That said, if the proper amount of liquid had been applied, the problem would not have happened. So, I would say that for the money paid, the cleaning was probably OK but not great. The over-wet carpet problem is simply a matter of the operator not taking adequate care in the application of the cleaning solution and not the fault of the process itself.

Zerorez of Portland
I previously left a 3 star review for ZeroRez, as I was disappointed with the results. At the time, I did not realize they offered a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. When I called to schedule a re-cleaning, both women I spoke with were understanding and courteous. They made re-scheduling easy. And this time, they sent two men instead of one.John Aston and Joel Johnson did a great job. They were very friendly and passionate about their work. They did not rush. They were attentive to detail and worked hard to get the carpet as clean as possible. They also gave me some tips on how to care for the carpet in the future. I am now happy with the results. If you really want zero residue left behind, their cleaning solution is for you. Although it smells great, as soon as it dries, the scent is gone. I rate my most recent zerorez appointment a 5... But because I rated my last appointment a 3, and I had to move all my furniture twice, I give this company an overall 4 star rating. -------------------------------------------I was very excited to finally have my carpets professionally cleaned, but the results were not worth the money, imo.Normally it takes SEVERAL hours to properly rug doctor my carpets, so I was shocked when the job was finished in 20 minutes with just one employee. The man was nice enough, but I felt sick paying $307 over such little work. The carpets smell better, but they are not visibly lighter. Normally when I use a rug doctor, the color of the carpet lifts several shades. Zerorez got out the main noticable stain, but the overall carpet color still looks dingey. I expected better results from professional carpet cleaning. It was disappointing, considering the price. On the plus side, there were no hidden fees and the employee seemed trustworthy. Next time I'll just rent a rug doctor for $60, though. It's so much cheaper. And when you clean the carpets yourself, you can make sure they get the attention required for more noticable results.

Barney's Pro Kleen Carpet Cleaning Portland
Barney arrived on time and got right to work. I believe he pre-spotted some areas (I wasn't actually watching him work) and moved some items that were too heavy for me to move or lift. He asked me if I wanted him to do the master bedroom closet (which is the size of a small room) and I said yes. At the time there was no discussion of an additional charge. As he finished each room, he carpet raked it and this made the carpet look especially pristine. When barney was near done, I asked him if he'd clean 3 small area rugs (e.g., 4' x 6') and - without hesitation - he said yes. I had pre-paid 4 rooms and he charged me an additional $25.00 for the closet but there was no additional charge for the area rugs. I felt the surcharge was reasonable and well deserved. I had been charged much more by other carpet cleaners in Portland prior to this. He also said that - if any of the spots seemed to return in the next couple of weeks - he'd come back and re-clean them.I would suggest that if you use Barney and there are some weighty things that have to be moved or changed in some way, you askBarney to clean the carpet in those rooms first so that those areas are dry by the time he's finished and he can then replace what was moved. I didn't check any of the rooms when he was done because I could see that he was doing a wonderful job when he did the family room (which was the first room he did) and, as a result, I ended up moving things back. The last Portland carpet cleaning service that came out just cleaned around each and every item. Not even cleaning under the kitchen table. Barney is very nice and works steadily and quickly. I was really happy with the job he did, would certainly recommend him and I will use him again when my carpets need re-cleaning.

Howells Carpet Cleaning
WOW. I was amazed by the amount of matted dog hair Geoffrey was able to groom from the carpeting. He used a machine I had never seen before but it worked extremely well and the odor issue is completely gone. Geoffrey said that he was in the business of winning customers and he just won another. Extremely satisfied and would recommend to anyone.

The service technician was very personable, polite, helpful with suggestions and information, and clean. He took time to explain options about what he would do and performed the tasks in a reasonable amount of time. The carpets were really soft even though they weren't dry yet and looked nice and clean.

Absolute Carpet Cleaning Inc
Just had my carpets cleaned and am very happy with the results. Last cleaning service I used was COIT. They did a lousy job and charged twice as much. Tom and Mike got the job done really fast and were a pleasure to do business with. I would most definetly recommend this owner/operator business.

Alameda Carpet & Upholstery Cleaners
I used Alameda carpet cleaners a few weeks ago and they did a fantastic job. I needed all my carpets cleaned before the holidays and they came through. I also ended up having them do my furniture too, I have absolutely no complaints!
Tips & Advices
Homeowners can purchase carpet cleaners ranging from compact units to full-size industrial-strength machines. Some models specialize in removing allergens from pet hair, while others may work better on tough stains. Some carpet cleaners can be bulky and require ample storage space. Other features you may want to consider for in a cleaning unit include: attachments that work on upholstery, stairs, bare floors, or small spaces; brushes; and a removable hose.
Renting is usually much cheaper than owning a machine or hiring a service. But not all rental units perform equally, some might require extra drying time or the use of special solvents that will cost more. - Renting a unit means you must also move furniture yourself and pay close attention to ensure you're operating the unit correctly. Making a mistake could mean damaging your carpet or the unit itself. Improperly drying carpet could allow harmful bacteria and mold to grow.
Yes. This may involve specifying exactly what services you would like performed, as well as the size of your home's carpeted area. Make sure you understand exactly what is included in a quoted price. Some businesses may charge extra to move furniture, clean stairs, or use special treatment methods. Ask questions if any detail about the quote is unclear.
Decide which method you want to use by taking into consideration not only cost, but how long the process will take from start to finish, including drying time. Don't always go with the service offering the lowest price, or hire a service who advertises door-to-door or over the phone, unless you have done thorough research on them. Ask if the company conducts background checks on employees, as well as if they are insured in your state. Without liability insurance, a mistake that results in damage to your home or furniture may be your responsibility to pay for.
Using powerful solvents to break down dirt and stains, dry cleaning puts less physical stress on the carpet, and thus might be better in the long run. However, dry cleaning is usually more expensive than hot-water cleaning services. In addition, the chemicals used to dry clean carpets might irritate pets, people with sensitive skin, or anyone sensitive to strong odors.
